According to du Bois Counter-Strike and Far Cry 2 were responsible for the school shooting. Tim K. translated his experiences with Counter-Strike into reality. Heini Schmitt (pictured),regional chairman of the DPolG in the German state of Hesse, has called for a ban on violent games in Germany, linking them to the recent Albertville school shooting, where a 17-year old former student went on a rampage killing 16 people, including himself.

Gamezine: The German school killer played Far Cry 2 the night before his murdering rampage, so expect the wider media to labour the point.

The Times has reported on further evidence in the south-west Germany shootings, where 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer killed nine pupils and three teachers at the Albertville secondary school in the town of Winnenden, north of Stuttgart, before killing himself.

The game Counterstrike has already been mentioned in passing, which was described by the Associated Press to be a game that "involves killing people to complete missions." Now Ubisoft's 2008 release Far Cry 2 has been connected to the shooting.

Far Cry 2 patch to add 'Hardcore' multiplayer mode, rebalances weapons (News)

We didn't know anyone wandered into Far Cry 2's expansive, hojillion-hour-long single-player campaign and somehow managed to make time to check out the game's multiplayer offerings, but apparently there's a sizable community of online FC2 players out there. This group has been calling for more realistic match settings for quite some time -- players can apparently catch more lead than Sonny Corleone and walk away with little more than a scratch and an interesting story.

Their pleas have been answered -- in a recent post on the FC2 community blog, the game's developers announced a patch which will, in addition to rebalancing the weapons in all multiplayer modes, add a more realistic "hardcore setting" to all match types. This mode will boost the damage for all weapons (ensuring speedier demises) and will let players tweak the "spawn times" (but not the "spawn rates", whatever that means). They didn't specify which platforms the patch will be landing on -- hopefully, they'll be affording a hasty death to all three.

Ubisoft Montreal's latest Prince of Persia title may have a significant impact on Ubisoft's financial performance, said company CFO Alain Martinez, particularly in an ever more competitive marketplace.

Speaking at the UBS Annual Global Media Conference, Martinez cautioned that it's "very early" to make definite projections on overall sales of the title, which launched this month, but the company "believes 2.5 to three million [sales] is clearly achievable."

The company is also hoping Ubisoft Montreal's Far Cry 2, which had an unusually mixed initial reaction, will end up being a steadier seller over the long term, rather than the explosive early seller the company had hoped for. Martinez said Ubisoft is "repromoting" the game, and now projects it to reach 2.5 to three million sales.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Far Cry 2 Multiplayer producer Richard Gaetan has said that Far Cry 2, along with other games with user-generated features, like the PS3's LittleBigPlanet, is evidence that the industry has reached "Gaming 2.0".

"I'm sure we'll have maps that are not really playable or not fun to play but that will be like pieces of art that are created from our editor," he said. "And we've seen it internally already. We have Montreal Olympic stadium built just from a few hundred blocks, so we'll have The Great Wall of China, the Colosseum from Rome, all stuff like that, alongside a lot of maps that are copies from other games, other shooters."

Videogaming 24/7: "The scale of Far Cry 2, as well as the fact the game's engine was a proprietary affair, prevented the inclusion of co-op in the upcoming shooter sequel, VG247 was told in London last week.

The Eurogamer Expo and gamesindustry.biz games fair has started selling tickets this week. You can buy a ticket for £5, which is donated to GamesAid, and gives you access to both events.

Games such as Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, LittleBigPlanet, Mirrors Edge, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Prince of Persia, Resistance 2, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Street Fighter IV and many more (with some still unannounced!) will all be playable.

Far Cry 2 producer Louis-Pierre Pharand has confirmed there will be four multiplayer modes in Far Cry 2.

In a Eurogamer interview, he said the obligatory Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes will be present and correct, along with Capture the Diamond (if you've ever played Capture the Flag, you can probably work it out).

Plus there's Uprising, described by Pharand as "a modified version of a VIP".

Ubisoft Confirms Far Cry 2 Ship Date and Announces Exclusive Pre-Order Edition (News)

IGN reports that today Ubisoft announced that Far Cry 2 will ship to retailers nationwide on October 21, 2008. Far Cry 2 will be available on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and PC.

Additionally, Ubisoft announced an exclusive pre-order partnership with Gamestop; Pre-order the game at GameStop and automatically receive a Limited Edition version of Far Cry 2. This exclusive edition is regularly priced and is only available at GameStop.

In addition to the regular SKU, the GameStop Pre-Order Edition includes:

* 6 Bonus Missions with about 3 bonus hours of explosive gameplay
* A fold out map of the open world of Far Cry 2

US gets Far Cry 2 on October 21 (News)

Though Far Cry 2 has long had a general October release, it now has an official October 24 launch date on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3--in Europe, anyway. American Ubisoft reps confirmed to GameSpot that the game will launch in the US on all three platforms three days prior on Tuesday, October 21. The date had been listed by online retailers for some time, but is now officially official.

Far Cry 2 will retail for $49.99 for the PC and $59.99 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As part of Today's European announcement, Ubisoft unveiled a collector's edition of the game (pictured), which will also include an "Art of Far Cry 2" book, a guide book, the obligatory making-of DVD, and a map of the game's 50 square-kilometer open world. In the UK, the CE will be available exclusively through retailer GAME. Ubisoft reps confirmed that the CE would also arrive in the US under a similar arrangement, but had no further details as of press time

"The developer says that the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC versions have been developed from the same core build, so they'll all share the same features," wrote Gamespot's Guy Crocker. "While we didn't see the PS3 version, it's claimed that the aliasing on Sony's machine outperforms that of the 360, while on the PC it's all dependent on the specifications of your machine."

Of course, this could all change before the game's release, as the title is still in development stages. However, if Ubisoft Montreal can unlock and utilize the power of the Cell processor, there is no doubt that they can provide better anti-aliasing and smoother graphics for Sony's flagship gaming platform.

Don't let the crystal clear water and golden sands fool you: as far as the developer of Far Cry 2 is concerned, videogame tropical islands have become the imaginative equivalent of two weeks at Butlins.

With the sequel to Crytek's memorable PC shooter ditching the shores of paradise in favour of the treacherous beauty of Africa, creative director Clint Hocking believes anyone making a game on a tropical island now is just "cashing in" on the success of Far Cry. And that includes the series' original creator, whose second title, Crysis, is set on, yep, a tropical island.

"Going somewhere you knew was real but was really foreign and exotic, and you never really expected you would get to go in your real life - that's the magic of Far Cry," he told Eurogamer.
