Quantcast

Fallout 3

Also known as: Fallout III

A huge, varied, epic, ambitious masterpiece

The game’s ‘dungeons’ come in the form of sewers, abandoned Vaults (which tell eerie stories about their former inhabitants) and the Washington DC metro system. Here you’ll find hordes of enemies to boost your XP and scrap to scavenge, which is used to create new weapons. Our favourite custom weapon’s the Rock-It Launcher, which is created by combining a leaf blower, a vacuum cleaner and some other bits. When you get this, ammo isn’t a problem as the device uses random objects as deadly projectiles; coffee mugs, books, rocks etc.

You customise your character’s abilities by choosing perks. Selected after each level, these include Cyborg (permanent boost to endurance and strength, but a loss of charisma) and Lady Killer (or its female alternative, Black Widow) which lets you seduce characters to get extra info and caps. We recommend Mysterious Stranger. With this, during VATS a random guy in a trenchcoat and hat will appear accompanied by a sting of Wild West music and kill the enemy with a pistol.

Our only major gripe is the weak voice acting, which often doesn‘t match the face of the person it’s coming from. Raiders will threaten you in a perfectly-intoned medieval brogue and every child has the same voice. It’s a critical oversight, and shatters the illusion that you’re in another world. The celebrity voice talent, however, is excellent. Liam Neeson has gravitas as your father, Malcolm McDowell is excellently pompous as the mysterious President Eden and Ron Perlman reprises his narrator’s role from the first two games. Fans will beam at his famous opening lines, “War… war never changes.”

Fallout’s genius is that there’s so much to see, do and discover, and it’s rare you’ll find a character who doesn’t have a quest or directions to a new location. The game buckles under the weight of its own ambition in some of the epic scenes at the end, but wandering the wastes, finding new towns and getting involved in the world’s politics is a thrill. The role-playing isn’t as far-reaching as Oblivion and as an FPS it’s merely above average, but there are almost no other shooters of recent memory as deeply imaginative and rewarding. Only BioShock offers such a consistent, well-designed world.

Until you’ve sat with it for 30 hours, from birth to epic ending, you won’t realise how engrossing it is. The freedom may scare people used to more linear shooters and the simplified customisation might disappoint hardcore RPGers, but if ever a game was worth broadening your horizons for, this is it.

You'll love
  • Imaginative, epic and brilliant
  • Works as RPG and FPS
  • Ripe with highlights and set-pieces
You'll hate
  • Not for instant-fix gamers
  • Not enough voice actors
  • Unsatisfying side-quests

I'm taking 4 busses and 2 and a half hours to get from campus to the Gamestop in the mall. It had better be worth it.

YO! Dude! "TheWebSinger", and other boneheads who go to retail stores to buy games... Don't travel hours for the game. "Direct2Drive" or "Steam" it! The only smart way to buy games now! (unless of course you plan on playing the console versions....sheesh!.. Console for non-sports games hahahahh! Silly, just plain silly)

Ok.. I am 6 hours into the game... Awesome! All that I hoped for and more... but... ARRGGG WTF is with this voice acting?? Some are outstanding, while others make me want to put a gun to my temple. The "Moira" shopkeeper in Megaton F*&%ing drives me crazy. I'd rather drill a screw in my brain then listen to her talk. Anybody else know what I am talking about? She has got to be the most annoying voice actor i have ever heard.. Arggg! Anyone got any extra Mentats? I need to boast my tolerance for horrible voice acting.

isnt this a review of the ps3 version? i mean since its written from a member of psm it must be but im quite certain im under the pc tab on this site..... and since this review is a 9 and doesnt state the horrible amount of bugs on the pc version ( alot of people cant even start the game without it crashing) then it surely isnt a review of the pc version of fallout 3. keep this crap under the right tabs please.

Same review as XBOX 360. Updated pictures for PC Graphics. I do have to say, this game is amazing. What would be 1 or 2 hours of playing for me (I usually play that much before getting bored with a game) turns into 6 hours and then I realize it's 2am. I love this game, and it's one of the few games I've played that keep me playing for hours and hours on end.

I just got this game and it is amazing. it is as good, and might even be better than oblivion. though im pretty sure there are WAY less weapons. and since you cant fast travel to all cities, only places you've discovered, that makes travel a pain. the only excuse is that its the first time you've ever left the vault. but if you have a pip-boy with a map. that shouldn't be a problem.

One of the reasons I love PC Gamer reviews is because you guys never make it easy to get a 10 out of 10, but I really think you were a bit too nit picky on this one. This game is one of the best I've ever played, and more engrossing and epic the 2nd or 3rd time through. Things like the kids voices being all the same, seriously? What about Halflife 1? What about great T.V. shows like South Park or even The Simpsons? Great shows, minimal voice actors. Which brings me to my point that vocal variety may bring more realism but it's also expensive and completely unnecessary. Gameplay, depth, freedom of choice, and environment are the focus (as it should be in a role playing game) and this game delivers it in spades. If you take into account the hours of play this game gives you for the dollars it costs to get you'd be a fool if you didn't grab it. If

This has got to be one of the worst reviews I've ever read. Maybe you could show a shred of professionalism (I assume you get paid for this) and mention at the beginning that the review will consist of a series of brief statements concerning the various features of the game followed by several, detailed pages of spoilers. It is possible to offer up a critic of a work without resorting to a detailed summary. Nice work.

i think this game is very hit and miss right out of the box, the world is great but the quests are terribad, possibly one of the worst main questlines in a game series.
