Batman: Arkham Asylum

Which villains will appear in Batman: Arkham Asylum 2?

It's never too early to predict a sequel, especially when there are this many clues

Words: Charlie Barratt, GamesRadar US

How do you follow a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum? You’ve just created arguably the greatest superhero title of all time. You’ve just raised the bar for every licensed adaptation to come. You’ve just won over the critics, the customers, the hardcore nitpickers and the casual fans. What can you possibly do next?

Easy. Make another one.

Obviously, Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 has not been announced. If the success of the first is any indication, however, we should expect a second. Better yet, we can already predict the sequel’s most important element – villains – simply by looking for clues in the original. Here, then, is who we strongly suspect might show up.

Killer Croc / Bane / The Scarecrow

These three are the most obvious inclusions for Arkham Asylum 2, and anyone who’s beaten the first game already understands why. Sit through the credits and you’ll be rewarded with an extra five seconds of story. They go something like this:

  • Batman flies away in his Batwing, looking like a total Batpimp.
  • Camera tilts down to the harbor water, revealing a forgotten barrel of Joker’s experimental Titan serum.
  • Monstrous hand erupts from said water and snatches said barrel.
  • Player exclaims, “Wow! _____ is gonna be in the sequel!”

What many gamers don’t realize, however, is that this final scene can change. Sometimes you’ll see Killer Croc’s hand, scaly and chained. Other times, it’s Bane with bulging veins and Venom-pumping tubes. Or Scarecrow’s needle-tipped fingers. As far as we can tell, the ending cycles randomly. Here are all three for your discerning comparison:

Clearly, the implication is that one of these characters has gotten hold of the serum and will soon be a house-sized, green-eyed freak, rampaging through the unsuspecting streets of Gotham. While we doubt any of them will be the sequel’s major villain, we do expect to see at least one in a supporting role. If you were the major villain, wouldn’t you want to harness their power?

Two-Face

Harvey Dent is always second. Once the Joker’s been checked off – once that classic matchup is out of the way – there is no villain that fans clamor for more than the coin tosser with dual personalities. Two-Face is simply too iconic, too important and too intrinsic not to include at some point. Because of his tragic history with both Batman and Bruce Wayne (not to mention Commissioner Gordon), he’s an essential part of the universe… a universe that, so far, Arkham Asylum’s creators have been very faithful towards.

They’ve already laid the groundwork. If you listen carefully enough during the first game’s ending, you’ll hear the following from a police dispatcher:

“All units, all units… the Second National Bank was just robbed by Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face… two officers down… suspect is fleeing in a patrol car!”

Above: Well, someone should probably go stop him, now shouldn’t they?

The Riddler

The best Batman villains are those who complement, and comment upon, a unique element of his character. The Joker, for instance, shows us that our hero is a mere step away from madness himself. Two-Face preys on the man behind the cowl, capitalizing on a former friendship with Bruce Wayne. Catwoman takes advantage of his eternal loneliness.

And the Riddler? He is the ultimate foil to Batman’s intellectual side, the villain most likely to bring out the “World’s Greatest Detective” and not just another fist fight.  The developers obviously appreciate this, including over 200 of the Riddler’s challenges as a side quest in the first game, but we want more. We want grand and intricate schemes, not merely trophies and puns. We want whole rooms and buildings hijacked by Edward Nigma, transformed into devious puzzle  traps that require every ounce of our hero’s wit, as well as every gadget on his belt.

The villain certainly has enough motive to antagonize Batman. Listen to how smug he sounds during this patient interview, right before his escape:

Now listen to how angry and vengeful he sounds after you’ve both completed all of his challenges and sent the police to his hideaway:

Yeah, that guy’s itching for a sequel.

Ra's al Ghul

The Demon’s Head, as this villain is sometimes called, does not seem like a natural fit for a videogame. At least not a videogame like Arkham Asylum. To begin with, he’s not insane, removing the eerie fear factor that so permeates the original. Also, he tends to travel the globe in his pursuit of mankind’s destruction, and we really don’t want Indiana Jones or Lara Croft mixed in with our Batman.

Worst, the good guy and the bad guy would share too many weird and unwanted connections. Bruce is often romantically linked with Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter and, in the latest comics, the two share a son (who also happens to be the newest Robin). That’s a lot of distracting baggage. No thanks.

Still, he’s definitely a possibility. In the current game, you can find his corpse while searching Arkham Mansion.

Return at the end of the game, however, and the body has vanished, no doubt whisked away by Ghul’s loyal followers, the League of Assassins. A quick dip in the Lazarus Pits – rejuvenating chemical pools in the DC universe – and Ra’s will be alive and ready for Arkham Asylum 2.

My guess is that Ras al Ghul will be in charge of the other villans executing...whatever plan they decide to execute.

Personally, I think Rocksteady would sooner remake Superman 64 (with no change in programming, game play, or graphics), and try to re-sell it as Arkham Asylum 2 than make a 3 and 4 (maybe 3, like God of War or Halo, but not 4). Although, instead of unexplained rubble, fallen buildings, or fences closing you in, it could just be a police barricade that the enemy knows about, and they could just, as you mentioned with "No Man's Land," have you clean up the city one section at a time, possibly with you going on a forced vacation (Alfred does try to keep Bruce's reputation intact, and might force a retreat), then, when you leave, Dr. Strange (both mentioned in game and knower of Batman's darkest secret) might tell the supervillians that Bats has flown the coop, and by the time you return, only things that haven't been taken over are the Batcave (although the villians think it is the Wayne Super-Vault, and are constantly trying to crack it from inside Wayne Manor, which is almost completely in ruins, during the game) and the police station, where they are barely holding on, having to constantly keep the Bat-signal on and protected until you can show up and start beating the villains back, allowing the police to extend their barricade around any buildings you clear, but the enemies constantly getting tougher (they see how you took down the last building because all buildings stay in constant video contact, and thus start defending against that offense) and more numerous (enemies from each building run away to get healed and to reinforce the others, and when you are spotted on one side of town, the other side sends its surplus guards) with each building (like in the latest Prince of Persia, where every place you cleanse of the darkness, the next places simply get tougher to beat, because the Darkness pulls back his resources to the other places, making them each have a higher concentration)

However, I just want to know why Two-Face would go into an amusement park, or how he would close off a city block, or even why he would take over Wayne Manor when he could take over a skyscraper (like Wayne Tech)

Finally, we all saw the Joker in extreme pain from his transformation back to his old self, so he will probably be giving himself laughing gas (as in medical laughing gas, not Joker gas) to ease the pain for some time.

No Man's Land would be a fantastic setting. I would love to go block by block and building by building recapturing Gotham. I can't get enough of Batman: Arkham Asylum. More please!

I think its possible that one of the guys who worked on Arham Asylum sees this and says, "Wow, this is genius!!!!" and then made another game with these ideas in it

I would love to see Two-Face in a sequel... I was pretty disappointed that he was only mentioned in the game. My favourite villain, even above The Joker!

eh a bit of everything would be nice...i havent got the game yet but reading about it is making me want it more and more everyday

A tremendous game by far. I wouldn't mind the sequel being set in a much bigger environment - I think Assassin's Creed proved sneaky-combat works in a big city environment - just redone for Gotham. Imagine Tim Burton's vision of Gotham City, with all the gothic architecture... Yeah, that was a pretty creepy place when you think about it. Now imagine getting to drive that wonderful machine glimpsed in the beginning of AA from location to location, not to mention the wonderful machine Batman flies off in at the end... Drool...

no mans land would be the perfect setting for a sequel!

Batman: No Man's Land, that's perfect! If you want it you have to get the developers to hear your ideas.
sgloomy  - 2 months 22 days ago
i agree with Antistasboneshield, no man's Land would be a great setting, i also kinda like to see the abandoned amusement park. as far as a villain, if its two-face, it would be kinda weird cuzz it would mean it happens right after this game and batman is gonna be a little tired considering, but they should definitely not try to get the whole city because that would be too big of a game to get right and i would really like to see catwoman, but not as a total villain but kinda a person who helps out a little when she is not stealing, all in all, if they do the same kinda work they did on this game, it will be an amazing game to say the least!

I want for between the 3 villans hand endings i want it to be the scarecrow that gets it. Knowing him i think he would use it for a reason other then go on a killing spree.

made me think

Why not city hall, the DA's office, or the GCPD HQ? If Two-Face were to make any place his territory, he would probably flip for those first.

P.S., ME WANT BATZARRO.

No man's land would be a cool idea. The world could be broken up like they're doing for Darksiders. Not quite Zelda's dungeons, but a similar concept.
foxhound  - 2 months 22 days ago
i wanna see some of the lesser known but cool villians show up like hush or batzarro (consult good old uncle wikipedia for them). Also while i really did think that arkham was a fantastic game, plz dont make the boss fights the same thing we see in everyother game batman a fantastic fighter deserses some variety, sorry to ramble on

You guys are neglecting to acknowledge the true star of this game - Edward Nigma. Since The Riddler made Batman: AA such a thrill, it's only natural to feature him as the mastermind behind the plot to spring Catwoman, Firefly, Penguin and others (mentioned but not seen in Arkham)in "Batman: Blackgate Penitentiary".

I think the prison, located on a small island in Gotham Bay, would be a nice location for a sequel. It would offer a similar atmosphere without a repeat of the first game.

(Remember, worldwidewonder said it first)
