German Mission 5: Remnant Fortress

Freed from the despotic Nazi government, Germany has rallied behind General Hardt and placed him charge of a temporary military government. But at a time when the Fatherland needs unity more than anything else, the Nazis who managed to elude the Allied and Resistance forces have established a massive base deep in the Black Forest. Even more troubling are reports that this redoubt is home to advanced superweapons research. The next course of action is clear: if Germany is to begin its journey down the road to recovery, the insurgents must be found and wiped from the earth.

Key Tactics and Battle Tips

  • Gain and keep control of the Drop Zone area
  • Produce Flammwagens and build Flame Bunkers to protect base from Jetpack Infantry
  • Build a mine and secondary base in the southwest
  • Use Maus tanks and armored forces from secondary base to stop scientists
  • Capture Nazi base in the middle of the map and set up a third base
  • Erect multiple V1 sites in middle of map to soften up main Nazi base

Map Legend

This has the potential to be your toughest battle yet, but if you keep four goals at the front of your planning the most difficult part will be keeping track of how many Commies you send to that great Motherland in the sky. To achieve victory, you must:

  • Gain and keep control of the Drop Zone east of your base
  • Defend your base against Jetpack Infantry attacks
  • Establish a large secondary base at the southern mine
  • Capture the German base in the middle of the map and turn it into a massive V1 launch area

Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that, but success in these four areas means the Nazi’s defeat is simply a matter of time.

As the mission opens, pause the game and sell the two Flame Bunkers guarding your base; at this point you need the Resources more than the protection they provide. Assuming you were smart enough to protect these units in the previous missions, send two Maus tanks south toward the mine, followed by the first free Engineer your Command Center produces. Be careful to send the Engineer along path close to the treeline west of the road—Russian Yakovlev Interceptors will strafe Engineers in clear view. If you don’t have the Maus tanks, send enough tanks or Wurfrahmen to take out the Flame Bunker that is protecting the southern mine area.

With the game still paused, order the Engineer to build a Supply Depot and have the Command Center produce an Opel and two Engineers. Get a Power Station up, then a Tank Factory and a Barracks. The Tank Factory will provide Wirbelwinds and Wurfrahmen to escort a force in order to stake a claim at the Drop Zone east of the base, and the Capture Building is needed skill to seize the buildings at the Nazi base in the middle of the map. You’ll also want to produce some Wehrmacht Infantry to join Preiss and Hellmann in their efforts to capture the lion’s share of the buildings in the middle German base. As the battle goes on — especially after you capture the middle German base — you need to erect a slew of Flame Bunkers to protect the western part of this base and AA Bunkers to protect the eastern side from air raids.

Select Preiss and use his Reinforcement skill to give you some troops, then send him and Hellmann toward the Drop Point along with the remaining available Core Units. You need these resources very, very badly. As soon as the Flame Bunker  at the south mine has been destroyed, move these units (hopefully the two Maus tanks!) due east to take out a Flame Bunker at  the crossroads where you plan to stop the convoy with the scientists (see map). After the Engineer  builds a Supply Depot at the southern mine, throw up a Tank Factory and pump out cheap Panther tanks — speed and quantity matter more than quality at this stage of the battle. Set the Rally Point near the crossroads at the bottom center of the map.
