Mission 5: Alpine Hideout
With the death of the Chancellor, Germany has erupted into all-out civil war. Slowly the Resistance has beaten back the Nazi forces, until now all that remain have fled to an Alpine redoubt for a last stand. Rooting them out would be a routine task, save for one little problem: the Nazi scientists have completed work on the V-1 flying bomb. Building up a military infrastructure strong enough to penetrate the sprawling defenses of the mountain base is difficult enough, and the Nazis ability to deliver unexpected devastation makes it even more daunting.
Primary Objectives
- Defeat the Nazi Base
- Disable the V1 Launch Pad
Secondary Objectives
- Clear Eastern Passage so Soviets can advance
- Find and Secure the Nazi Hideouts
Secret Objectives
- Destroy the NE and NW Auxiliary Facilities
Key Tactics and Battle Tips
- Use air power to aid the Russians
- Immediately Send Core Units west
- Sagnier can destroy first V1 site
- Paratroops can find Nazi hideouts and auxiliary bases
- Build second, third, and even fourth bases as you advance
Map Legend
- Primary base: you will want to build three to four Airports here
- Take Heroes and Core here. Sagnier can destroy the V1 Launch site from the base of the plateau.
- Use a mix of Lightnings, Mustangs, and Call-In B-17 Bombers to aid the Russians.
- Build a Barracks and train troops to Capture Buildings; move west and build a Supply Stash at the mine. This is your second base.
- This is the point your Heroes and Core Units should advance to at the start of the battle.
- Use an Engineer to build a Supply Stash here and start a third base.
- Assemble your armored battalion here. Be sure it has Bofors to protect against Me 262s.
- The German Command Center.
H Nazi Hideouts
AX Auxiliary bases; you must destroy these to achieve a Secret Objective.
D Defensive line of Pillboxes and armored units.
Before you begin the mission, pause the game and make sure your Heroes Skills are active and upgrade them if possible.
There are two major issues facing you as this mission starts: the Germans have an operational V1 Launch Site, and the Russians need assistance in their efforts to break through German defensive positions at the eastern edge of the map. It’s tempting to send your Heroes and Core Units to the aid of the Russians, but as you do this German armor and infantry will begin pouring down into the plain north of your base and south of the V1 Launch Site. While it’s possible to use your Heroes and those experienced armored forces to help the Russians and still gain a foothold on the plain, we suggest using the Allied advantage in air power to deal with the Russian situation.
Send your Heroes, Core Units, and an Engineer to the base of the plateau that’s home of the V1 Launch Site. From there, Sagnier’s Bomb Skill can be used to destroy the V1 site and prevent it from being used against you as you attempt to build your bases. We say “bases” in the plural because you will be using a strategy similar to the American plan of “island hopping” in the South Pacific: you will build bases as you advance and gain control of mines. This allows you to rush reinforcements to the front lines much more quickly.
You’ll start by building a Barracks near the Oil Rigs in the lower center of the map and erecting a Supply Stash near the mine just to the west. Be sure to upgrade the Barracks with the Capture Buildings ability so the MG infantry it produces can capture the Oil Rigs. As your Engineer constructs these buildings, push forward ruthlessly with the Heroes and your Core Units. You should be able to reach and destroy the Combat Academy that guards the northern path leading up to the V1 Launch Site and also to the German base.
You might be wondering at this point why we didn’t recommend capturing the V1 Launch Site and turning it on the Germans. There are several reasons. First, you need to capture at least two secret hideouts (see below) before the MG Infantry know where the mines around the Launch Site are located: send them in before then, and they’ll be blown to ribbons as they advance toward the building. It generally takes a while for the battle to stabilize before you can capture those two hideouts, and in that time the V1 could have caused you major headaches. Another good reason is that it’s another building to defend—and it can take a lot of armor and troops to keep it intact. Simply put, it’s just not worth the effort.
As your Heroes and Core Units advance to knock out the V1 site, quickly build as many Airports as you can. Don’t worry the first few times the Russian commander complains of needing help: by moving quickly, you can get your planes over the battle in time. Focus on constructing P-38 Lightnings, but be sure to add two or three Mustangs into the mix to fend off Me 262s. And don’t forget the Call-In B-17 Bombers at your disposal (you get one for every Airport you build). By using them, you will discover the secondary objective of finding and destroying the Nazi hideouts (the B-17s will fly over one of the hideouts after dropping its bombs).
Back at the area near the Oil Rigs, you’ll want to construct a Weapon Factory and build some Bofors—this base is prone to constant air raids by the Nazis. Eventually you’ll want to replace them with AA Turrets, but these will do for now. That Weapon Factory can also reinforce the “expeditionary” force of your Heroes and Core Units that advanced so far so quickly, as well as produce units to guard the nearby Supply Stash. At the primary base, upgrade to Tech Level 2 and, when that’s accomplished, build an Aero Research Facility to provide your planes with more speed. Be sure to use the Extended Airfield upgrade at each Airport to double the number of planes it can produce from two to four.
