The "Hemmed in a corner with no good access to plentiful resources" scenario:
Stop all unnecessary production of units and factories (within reason of course) and focus on developing your economy internally through the use of Mass Fabrication plants, adjacency bonuses, and collecting natural resources with your engineers (rocks and trees). Then branch out and take what should have been rightfully yours from the start!
