Quantcast

Devil May Cry 4

Also known as: DMC4, Devil May Cry Four

Kick-ass powers that game characters forgot they had

They're oh so badass in the cutscenes, but once you're in control? Useless!

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

Game: Killer Instinct

Characters: Fulgore

In-game failing: A lack of killer instinct

Fulgore was a robo-soldier prototype entered in the tournament as a test of his combat abilities. The verdict? Weapon systems great, AI rubbish. He's installed with a bloody huge great machine gun in his neck, but he always forgets to use it until he's already knocked his opponent out. Hey Fulgy, wouldn't it be a good idea to use it in the actual fight? Say right at the beginning?

Game: Resident Evil

Character: Jill Valentine

In-game failing: Basic motor control/sense of self preservation

Forget the fact that the opening cutscene clearly shows Jill managing to run in a straight line for at least 10 feet - like that's ever going to happen once the old Resident Evil tank controls kick in - where her realtime self really fails is in the way she loses all capacity for rational thought when confronted with a monster. Compare and contrast:

"Hmm, now just how did we get away from those dogs in the woods?", she wonders, as the steady approach of death does nothing to jog her memory.

I'd have to admit, I always thought about this, especally after playing the Devil May Cry series. Why can't we be a total bad ass when we finally get to use the controller? It is fun to watch though.

XD at Jill Valentine...so true. those games have always been sloppy in the movements.
As for Devil May Cry...the cutscenes were really the highlight of the entire series...shame that the anime series doesnt keep the same energy as the cutscenes do XD.

And what of our beloved Kratos? I'm pretty sure he was slinging one-hitters in all the cutscenes too, wasn't he?

kinda related, but theres also Kurthnaga from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn. he comes in in a short cutscene in dragon form where he charges up an awesome breath attack and obliterates part of a castle and sends the little enemy soldiers scurrying around like ants. then when you get to use him, hes starts weak compared to how awesome he was in the cutscene.
