Call of Duty: World at War

Is Call of Duty: World at War better than Call of Duty 4?

Our editors pick sides and do battle. Which shooter will emerge victorious? You decide!

Words: GamesRadar US

Why World at War is better: Call of Duty 4 piled on the drama pretty thick, so World at War had a tough act to follow. You can keep your anonymous order barkers, however, because developer Treyarch saw fit to hire A-list, professional yellers: Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman!

Screw Soap McTavish... World at War’s faceless protagonists have to answer to Jack Bauer and Sirius Black! These iconic actors resonate with the audience immediately, as well as bring plenty of acting chops to the proceedings. - Chris

Why Modern Warfare is better: I’ll admit that Kiefer Sutherland does add a certain gravitas to the Call of Duty experience. And Gary Oldman? Wow! If he hadn’t already starred in three Legend of Spyro games (alongside Elijah Wood and Wayne Brady), I’d be totally and not at all sarcastically impressed!

Call of Duty 4’s story and characters are the best for the simple reason that they’re the only Call of Duty story and characters anyone has ever cared about. Previous entries were stocked with generic and interchangeable soldiers that lost their lives before you could learn their names. Gaz and Captain Price, on the other hand, are instantly memorable; their fates are truly meaningful. And while World at War is stuck telling the same story we’ve heard a thousand times before, Modern Warfare seems as fresh and immediate as today’s headlines. – Charlie

Why World at War is better: Call of Duty 4’s multiplayer is considered a broadband masterpiece by many, and rightly so. World at War, however, adds new features that people demanded – four player online co-op, capture the flag, secondary gun mounts on vehicles, more custom slots, more weapons, more maps and more perks, dammit! Do I even need to mention that they included a survival mode involving the reanimated corpses of fallen Nazis, or are you ready to concede defeat? - Chris

Why Modern Warfare is better: The two games’ multiplayer modes are almost identical, but Modern Warfare was the blueprint on which World at War was conceived. Adding a few extra perks and some exotic Japanese temple maps can’t hide that fact. They also can’t hide that the text fonts and screen HUDs were copied over from Modern Warfare, too, despite making no sense whatsoever in a 1940s environment.

And the attack dogs? I’ll take an air strike, thanks. - Charlie

Why World at War is better: The competitive co-op mode is, hands down, one of the greatest things I’ve played all year. Jostling for points with friends online drastically changes the entire dynamic of the single player campaign from “just stay alive” to “kill it first!” - Chris

Why Modern Warfare is better: You know Modern Warfare doesn’t have co-op. All you’ve proven with the inclusion of this category, sir, is that you are an ass. - Charlie

WaW for the win! An improved CoD4, with more features. Oh, and you can fight off hordes of zombies in a haunted house in WaW!

....Second!

Call of Duty 4 hands W@W it's ass all day. It's pretty damn difficult to argue that World At War is better, and no offense, Senor Antista (insert tilde with your mind, please), but your arguments failed compared to Charlie's.

WaW is way better, and it's sad that the makers of MW are mad at the WaW creators

Okay, now that I've read the article and I'm not just typing random junk as fast as I can to ensure no one beats me to second:
The only thing that the modern warfare side used against WaW is that it's set in modern times. But, who's to say which is better? Personally, the time period the game is set in is one of the last things I look for when buying a game. (Oh, and if you refuse to dismiss the time period, I have one thing to say to you: Frantically blowing the limbs off of half crazed suicidal Japanese soldiers storming your bunker vs. laying in a field while your (ferocious!) enemies walk right past you. Hmmmmmm...) Also, exploding headshots, paintball guns, and "Rage mode" aren't even in the same ball park as running around at an exaggerated speed with low visibility and piano music in the background(Ragtime warfare). AND! MW side says that WaW isn't special for having a flamethrower, because "every other game" has one, but doesn't that only make 4 sub par for not having one?

Post Script: For all you on the fence about which game is superior: Can you incinerate zombies in a haunted house with your buddies in Modern Warfare? I think not.

Thank you,
Cpt CHARLES

Mr. Charlie Barratt says he wants a silenced sniper rifle but in COD4 i never got that option to put that on my sniper rifle =(

I never understood the point of these petty arguments, and still don't, other then just add oil to a already huge wildfire, so i'll just say my favorite, give a short explanation why, and hide in a corner....

World at war, something just clicks with that game to me. Everyone has a favorite and a preference, nothing is better.

Charlies is being very negative.
Why not look at the good things of WAW instead of all the bad things?
Have some optimism.

First of all, if I want zombies, I"ll get Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and so on. Second, I don't feel enraged if I can only kill with a knife. I feel enraged when I've got a gun that's killed so many people in so little time. The flametrower is the best there is, I admit, but the only reason there's not one on MW is beacause your enemies are stronger, smarter, and have better weapons. Ur pretty much shining a beacon saying"I'm right here!". I MW, you get a helicopter that kills efectively. In WaW, you get dogs that die with a knife. Not the best to go with. Yes, in WaW, you drive a tank, but ur pretty much the first thing there gonna try to kill. Plus, you don't have bulletproof vests and get shot and killed easily. And, seriously? Paintballs aren't supposed to represent blood. So what, vampire. The fact is, u can only regenerate when u kill, but if ur facing an entire squad, ur skrewed.

dude, if you'd rather the air strike over attack dogs, you need a good therapist.....world at war/flamethrower FTW!!

Personally I think CoD4 is way better. W@W you already know the outcome, the Allies win before you even pick up the game. Now MW could actually happen, and who knows what would happen if it did. Also I feel that in MW you get more attached to the characters so when they die you die on the inside. I am serious, I actually cried when it showed Captain Price die, and who knows if Griggs is actually dead or not, he got shot once in the upper chest, so who knows.

COD4 is a Tom Clancy xerox, have you even read one actually? you obviously haven't Charlie, a revisit to WWII is no setback to a game, what would make a shooter suck in that premis is if it was only another clone with no expansion on the genre, CODWAW is like a COD4 WWII mod with a new storyline, not another medal of honor rising sun, WWII is totally fine in moderation, 2 year market lapse in the genre is moderation, besides, no COD, neither modern nor WWII will ever stack up to the first three medal of honors or any Battlefield, yes an EA game is better than an infinity ward game, you can suck it

I think they're both great games, but CoD4 beats out CoD:WaW ever so slightly, in terms of story and multiplayer. Although I love both game's multiplayer modes, some of the things Treyarch added (such as vehicles) throw the balance off a little in versus modes. But then again, WaW does have co-op and Capture the flag, so those two things kind of balance the vehicles.
