Doom & Doom 2

How to make a Doom level

Something else to do in your room besides... you know...

Words: Alec Meer, PC Gamer UK

Alright, alright. You got us. We know Doom and it's sequels have been out... well, forever now. But with its recent release on Xbox Live, we figured it would be awesome to give you a taste of how it's done. This guide's a little complicated, but if you're patient, then you'll be unleashing your own demons of hell in no time. Within the game of course... unless you really are the spawn of Satan. Happy building!

What you'll need:

A copy of Doom or Doom II
The free shareware version is ok

Code Imp’s Doom Builder application

The Doomsday engine

Doom may be old, but learning to map for it still teaches useful level design skills. To get started, you'll need Doom 1 or 2 on your PC. Install Doom Builder, and go straight to Tools>Configuration>Files. Select Doom and/or Doom 2, click "browse," then navigate to the original games' DOOM.WAD and/or DOOM2.WAD files. Click File>New, choose "Doom" or "Doom 2" from the Configuration drop-down menu, and name your level MAP01.
