Fan films gone wrong: Part 2

The good, the bad, and the WTF

Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

The Legend Of Zelda: The Hero Of Time

For the first few seconds, you might wonder just why exactly we’ve chosen to knight this one with a lengthy frozen turd. It’s nicely shot and has a great ethereal Lord Of The Rings atmosphere, so much so that early on we ourselves were very hopeful for its success. But then Link turns up looking like an awkward, gangly, stoned James Van Der Beek, sporting what we really hope for his sake is a bad blonde wig (but sadly suspect isn’t), and it all takes a terminal quality nosedive. It’s painful, it really is. With directorial vision clearly well above the fan film average, the pantomime hero sticks out like an ebola patient in a Gap ad, and turns a promising trailer into a Hallowe’en party. Some Zelda fans are really looking forward to the finished movie. We are really not amongst them.

Also, -10 charisma for the cheap and cliched recycling of Clint Mansell’s brilliant Requiem For A Dream score at the end. Indie film-makers, please stop doing that! Stop doing that now!
