10 most frustrating things about gaming online

The source of so much joy... yet even more pain

Words: Justin Towell, GamesRadar UK

Online gaming is completely different to offline play. There's a tangible buzz and quickening of the heart-rate when you're leading a race on the last lap or sniping some guy in Australia, which you simply can't get from a single-player experience. But this experience can be so easily ruined by a few small things. Technical or man-made, these obstructions threaten to tip otherwise well-balanced men over the edge of madness and into the pits of frustration-fuelled rampage mode. And these are they.

1) Not being able to pause

The phone's ringing. Your girlfriend's at the door. The cat's brought in a live bird. You've got an itch. You need to pee. There's a swarm of bees and the window's open. Your pizza's ready. Your baby brother's reaching for the flex that dangles from the still-hot iron. There's a UFO hovering outside the window and the aliens are posing for a photo.
But you can't pause the game! What's it gonna be?

2) Other people's crap connections

If there's one technological issue even more frustrating than the game taking ages to create a match, it's lag. This is where players with a slow internet connection jump around the screen as the game tries to calculate their position and actions in relation to everyone else. Modern games are very clever in their methods of concealing lag, but these often compound the issue. For instance, driving behind a laggy car, you'll see it flicker around, jumping from a short distance ahead of you to about a mile down the track, and back again in a second.

This is fine, until it materialises halfway through your own car, immediately making the game think you've hit it at 3,000mph and destroying your vehicle. Keeerrrunch!

Above: The mystery is finally solved. This Ferrari was the victim of lag

3) Lobbies emptying just before a game

We've got a full game – this is it. 8 vs 8 team deathmatch. All players are ready. Let's start the countdown. But wait - people are dropping out. Where are they all going? Now it's 4 vs 5 and we need another player. Nope, now it's three on three. Game starts in 5… 4… Oh, now it's 2 vs 3. Someone leaves. Game starts in 2… two more leave and now it's just us. Game start? Yes. Let's play single-player team deathmatch.

4) Shooting someone a zillion times doesn't kill them, but one shot from their gun kills you instantly

Dududududuh.
Dududududududududududududuh!
DUDUDUDUDUDUDUDUDU…

-Pap-

*dead*

8 and 10 are the biggest problems for me. everytime I play far cry 2 online, punkbuster kick me off the server the moment the game starts. for 10, I can't even join the freakn' game my friends on.

That thousand bullet one is so true on TF2

You forgot getting kicked by someone for no reason (at best) or because you're humiliating the host (at worst).
As for the UPDATE to play online, MGO is the worst. I stopped playing it partly because it may take up to a whole day to download the latest version.

A variation on number 5: People calling you things, when you kick their ass in the game.

what i hate the most is when someone wins a match and then act like they did the most brilliant thing ever and then send you messages saying PWND and crap like that, whats funny is that most of them actually suck and won by luck, and even worse are the people who lose and can't believe it so they send you a message calling you a cheater and how your mother is this and that. if you win, great, if you lose, too bad, just fucking move on!

Number 4, always number 4! But then again it could just boil down to me being monumentally retarded. Throw number 4 in with some abuse from a prepubescent 10 year old mixed with a healthy dose of tea bagging and that's normally enough to make me want to self harm during a match.

The one that I can't stand is # 6. People talking in foreign languages. I am about to start a match and a whole group of this people just started to talk in a foreign language, but thats not the part that pissed me off. The part that pissed me off is when they started to say my username and started laughing. Those bastards.

There can be a lot of no.5 on tf2

Don't forget the a-holes without mics. I love the PS3, but there are so many people on PSN with no mics, that it makes some online games frustrating, or downright unplayable.

I have the worst luck with #5 on that Magic: The Gathering game on XBLA. It seems about 75% of the time, literally the SECOND before I defeat someone, they quit. What's even worse is that there is no penalty to losing, but you win new cards by winning matches. It's absolutely infuriating!

I hate when people quit when they're about to lose, at least Halo 3 added a penalty for when playing ranked, although I never really played Halo 3 matchmaking.

Great article though.

I'm so glad that people talking in another language w/o taking a breath was pointed out... that is one of the primary reasons I don't play Live

I'd say one of the worst things is being put into a game thats about to finish.

You've just managed to get a bit of spare time, so you fancy a quick game of COD4 or similar. You log in, manage to keep your sanity through the inevitable "Couldn't connect to server" that happens at times, and just when you finally manage to get in a game, you checkthe score and you've got 10 seconds left before you're back in the lobby and it starts again!

As good as online is, they need to make it so it's more about playing online and not waiting around trying to play online. In some games you hardly get any play time as the networking is so bad.

Entertaining and interesting article, with most of the points valid concerns. But for #1...really? You suck at life if you can't even put down your controller for real life stuff.
