They are everywhere, there is one in every guild, and quite frankly, the majority of the gaming population isn't impressed."

If you have played an MMO, you have experienced people like this. Primarily women (or men pretending to be women) they act like sexy vixens to get loot, money, and attention. This article looks at this type of behavior and calls it out!

Earlier in the week, EverQuest's new 51/50 server "Mayong" went live. Pretty much anyone that played EQ around launch will recognize the name as that of the infamous vampire Mayong Mistmoore, a character that was sometimes played by GMs and devs for live events way back in the day. For those not familiar with the special rules of this server type, it's fairly simple: 51 is your starting level, and 50 is the number of AAs you automatically receive upon making a character.

To get people in the mood to begin the inevitable leveling races, and also to celebrate Independence Day, there is a 51% experience boost for players on all servers until Monday morning.
Okay, so most players would have been killing stuff anyway, but the reason for the tip comes from the fact that there's more experience on offer than usual:

EverQuest adventurers will be surrounded by a magical DOUBLE experience increase. And double XP means 100% extra XP, or 200% XP... Whichever way you want to look at it, that's a lot of XP! Happy adventuring!
In return, winners will receive an in-game item emblazoned with their character (or real life) picture, a special in-game title "The Fabled" and one year of free game time."http://www.n4g.com/SubmitNews.aspx
There's also a whole host of changes to spells, guildhalls, UI, quests and achievements, as well as a new dungeon and new solo content for high and mid level players.

Sony Online Entertainment has donated over $20,000 USD to the Child's Play 2009 Winter Charity Drive, with help from players of the popular MMOs EverQuest and EverQuest II.

Each time a player of EQ or EQII bought a certain Child's Play virtual item on the Marketplace with Station Cash, SOE's recently introduced in-game currency, SOE donated $10 USD to the charity.

Worldwide, nearly 45 million people play massive multiplayer online role-playing games like EverQuest II, and the amount of real-world money associated with virtual worlds would make it the seventh largest country in the world according to gross domestic product.

"This is not a trivial issue," Contractor said. "Now that we have the computing power to study these networks, we can explore different theories about social processes on a scale that was never possible before."

Via Massively: "Sony Online Entertainment has sent out a customer service notification to EverQuest players, dealing with some changes that will potentially affect your account(s). Perhaps the biggest news is an impending server merge -- 'The Combine' and 'Druzzil Ro (Xev)' servers will merge on January 21 at 3 a.m. PST, a process which is expected to last roughly five hours. The new server will retain the name 'Druzzil Ro.' While server merges tend to be portents of doom and gloom by some players, EverQuest will also add a new server in March. Players will be able to vote on which type of server it will be later this month."
Thanks to Raph Koster, they were given free reign with the whole of SOE's EverQuest II-related user statistics.
Brazilian officials have wielded the ban hammer on online games EverQuest and Counter-Strike. Both games are accused of inciting violence and are "harmful to consumers' health," according to a report by news source AFP.

The ban was actually officially ordered last October but has only now gone into effect. Neither game can now be sold in the country.

Judge Carlos Alberto Simoes ruled that Counter-Strike and EverQuest promoted "the subversion of public order" and "were an attack against the ...

Most MMO players know the story of IGE and Affinity Media by now, (the owners of WoWhead, Allakhazam, Thottbot and WoWinterface), and their relationship. A really interesting article popped up on Radar Online today which highlights some of the dodgy characters that are involved in the Affinity Media business which had claimed to have no involvement with IGE. Brock Pierce who is an advisor and a board member of Affinity Media, is highlighted in the above article and I have to say there's some pretty unsavoury stuff here pointing at child abuse. This has been brought up before regarding Brock Pierce who has apparently denied charges but there are filed legal cases which he has tried to settle.

In related news, there has been paperwork filed this week where IGE admits that it is Affinity Media (see additional link). Not that anyone doubted it. Next time you hit up an Affinity Media site, just think about who you are supporting and who's pockets your traffic is lining with cash.
The pioneer - Everquest | 1999 | PC
The major drawback of RPGs is that in a world populated by millions, you are the only real person. Sure you can "talk" to NPCs, but there was no real interaction in the one genre that would benefit from it most. So the advent of MMORPGs was the natural step to bring gamers together, While some fondly remember Ultima Online, Everquest was the breakthrough that managed to unite gamers in droves and usher the modern MMORPG into the mainstream. By including ...
Intent upon making sure you're forever tethered to your keyboard, Massively Multiplayer Online megapublisher Sony Online has announced two new additions to its role-playing EverQuest franchise.

Study Reveals Consumer Demand and Confidence in Secure, Official
Marketplace for Buying and Selling the Use of In-Game Characters, Items and Coin for Real World Money

Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a worldwide leader in online games, today announced the results of a
12-month study of Station Exchange(TM), SOE's online auction site which
allows EverQuest II subscribers to securely buy and sell the rights to use virtual characters, items and coin for real money. Launched in June 2005, Station Exchange's first-to-market product marked the inaugural entry of an official, sanctioned virtual economy into a Massively Multiplayer Online game. The White Paper highlights data collected during a 12-month period covering June 2005 to June 2006.

The auction site, which has operated since June 2005 on specific
EverQuest II servers, generated player transactions of $1.87 million during its first year, according to the White Paper published today. Players have paid as much as $2,000 for the right to use a single EverQuest II character and one seller earned $37,435 from 351 auctions, according to the report, entitled Station Exchange: Year One.
