SEGA Europe announced today that Update 1.4 for Empire: Total War will be available in late September. The update includes an overhaul of the Artificial Intelligence, implemented both on the campaign map and in the real time battles. Improvements have also been made to sieges and navel battles.
"This update will please all Empire: Total War players as we've continuously listened to the feedback received via our forums", says Mike Simpson, Creative Director at The Creative Assembly and father of the Total War Series. "The framework has been laid down for all the exciting content that will come to the series in the future, and that's thanks to all the players of Empire: Total War"

Both Creative Assembly and the militaries it has tried to model mastered the pre-gunpowder art of war, and they used systems that were effective in controlling legions of swordsmen, archers, and mounted cavalry. While early gunpowder units operated alongside these troops as the feudal era drew to a close, they were rarely as effective as a unit of spearmen or bowmen, and they didn't need to play a very large role."» Read More

The Creative Assembly decided to improve and add onto the land units and battles for their recent 1.3 patch for Empire: Total War. However the development team behind the recent historical RTS game is already prepping for their 1.4 patch and this one will make some improvements in the game's naval battles.
In a post on the game's official message board, the team states they hope to "create greater diversity between different ship types along with improving the overall game play of the battles." What does this mean? Well, it means that for the upcoming 1.4 update, the high powered Ships of the Line will still be powerful but will have "low accuracy, slow turn speed and lower range compared to frigates and small ships." That means the patch will bring "a new dynamic and rock, paper, scissors element" to the game's naval battles. There's no word on when the patch will be released.

As we've covered, the "new" units are really just one new unit (Russian grenadiers) along with a range of individualised redesigns. As for the fixes, most important of those seems to be one that says "various optimisations have been made to AI and path systems to reduce the campaign map turn times
