The fourth annual MMO Calendar, which raises funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, is now on sale.

Developers of a wide range of Massively Multiplayer Online games have dedicated artwork from their games to the cause. This year, the list includes a mix of old and new games, some yet to come such as Funcom's The Secret World.

Anyone who purchases a calendar is also entered into a prize draw where they can win one of ten prizes for each game that features in the calendar.

A video game company claims Atari breached a licensing agreement for it to develop a new form of "Dungeons & Dragons." Turbine, the plaintiff, develops and operates "massively multiplayer online role-playing games," or MMOs.

The complaint in New York County Court alleges that Atari granted Turbine a sublicense to "Dungeons & Dragons" and "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" so that Turbine could develop and operate a subscription-based MMO called "Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach."

Turbine claims Atari acted unreasonably in its efforts to promote and distribute "DDO: Stormreach," and failed to devote the necessary resources to it. It claims Atari breached the agreements by accepting payments - including future royalty payments - in return for extending their relationship and paving the way for the launch of Turbine's free-to-play "DDO: Unlimited" service, though Atari knew it would not perform its obligations under the agreements and knew it would pretextually seek to declare Turbine in breach of the agreements.

Joystiq writes: "Yesterday, Turbine made a startling announcement that wowed penny-wise online gamers -- its D20 rollin' MMO, Dungeons and Dragons Online would receive a free-to-play edition with the subtitle Eberron Unlimited. There's just one caveat -- Unlimited is going live this summer in North America only. Codemasters confirmed the European exclusion in a statement, explaining "DDO Europe will not be assuming this new business model and the European DDO game service will remain a monthly subscription-based game."

There's a chance that Europe could eventually gain access to Unlimited, as the statement mentions, "as the beta progresses we will release more information regarding the future plans for EU players." Keep your eyes peeled and your perception checks high for more news on the matter as the beta opens its doors..."
Players can choose from one of 6 character types and they can customise their hero with various items of clothing or other objects that might come in useful in a dark corner. Regular tournaments promise games of even greater intensity and will allow all players to measure themselves against the best, thanks to a real-time ranking system. Dungeon Party is slated for a Q1 2009 release.
I dislike drastic rule rewrites because improved rules for grappling aren’t what lure me to RPGs. I play RPGs because they allow me the unique experience and unparalleled freedom of creating a personalized alter-ego who can do what I want in a simulated world.

Via Massively: "Before you try to throw the case out of court, hear out the evidence first:
1. Schad notes that Turbine's careers page calls for a console engineer, and if you read the description of what they're looking for, phrases like 'extend the functionality' and 'updating Turbine's MMOG engine' point directly to a console port kind of situation.
2. And the DDO team specifically has just recently announced that big changes are in the air over there -- they've suspended the 'Weekly Dev activities' alert, saying that what they're working on is under wraps, and that the Turbine PR team is giving them more focus."
Yes, there is already Dungeons and Dragons Online by Atari, which is estimated to have around 100,000 subscribers worldwide, but this new game will not be anything like the MMORPGs we know and love, don't expect a fully interactive 3D world; the graphics will represent the tabletop game.

Most MMO players know the story of IGE and Affinity Media by now, (the owners of WoWhead, Allakhazam, Thottbot and WoWinterface), and their relationship. A really interesting article popped up on Radar Online today which highlights some of the dodgy characters that are involved in the Affinity Media business which had claimed to have no involvement with IGE. Brock Pierce who is an advisor and a board member of Affinity Media, is highlighted in the above article and I have to say there's some pretty unsavoury stuff here pointing at child abuse. This has been brought up before regarding Brock Pierce who has apparently denied charges but there are filed legal cases which he has tried to settle.

In related news, there has been paperwork filed this week where IGE admits that it is Affinity Media (see additional link). Not that anyone doubted it. Next time you hit up an Affinity Media site, just think about who you are supporting and who's pockets your traffic is lining with cash.
So, it came as a pleasant surprise when we heard that the second content module for the massively multiplayer Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach is going to be completely free for subscribers.

The Twilight Forge expansion not only offers up a new group adventure, but introduces a new player race to the mix - the Drow. The Drow are better known as the ...
