Diablo 3 Dev Team Does Not Have all Classes and Act 1 Done (News)

Diii.net reports that there has been a misunderstanding growing among the Diablo community since Rob Pardo made a few comments on the game's progress in an interview at WWI 2008, which would imply that Blizzard have all the classes and most of the game ready to play in their office. The rumour has it that a lot of work is done on the game and that Blizzard is just keeping their great game back to spite the fans.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the US PC chart was once again dominated by releases from Blizzard and Electronic Arts as The Sims 2 Apartment Life expansion pack made it to the top of the list for the week ending August 30.

According to the latest data from NPD, the World of Warcraft: Battle Chest came in at second, with The Sims 2 Double Deluxe taking third place.

The original World of Warcraft title was fourth, with the Spore Creature Creator in fifth, followed by the only non Blizzard/EA title in the top ten - Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm from Greenwave was in at number six.

Blizzard have released WoW, Starcraft and Diablo mobile phone Ringtones and Wallpapers, available to purchase directly from them!

The ticket drawings of 1500 tickets is now concluded, and the lucky people who were drawn can now buy up to two tickets each for BlizzCon (the mathematically gifted can count that 1500 x 2 = 3000 promised tickets). For tickets not bought where people only buy one, or where people forget to check their mail, more names will be drawn from the same pool. No word on exactly when though, not even in the BlizzCon FAQ...

Found on the Unofficial Diablo 3 Site Diii.net (also known as Diabloii.net to Diablo fans) have noticed something quite big going on inside the current home of the Lord of Terror; Diablo boards on Blizzard's Battle.net.

It appears that while the game has been shown to be very modern, using cool effects and being more practical than its predecessor, their infrastructure (Battle.net) is still running on the same software as in the "good old day", and what is presumed to be Diablo haters are spamming the boards with hundreds of thousands of posts.

If you were lucky enough to go to Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational in Paris at the weekend, you would have gotten a scratch card in your goody bag which entitles you to a World of Warcraft in-game mini pet. Until now, we didn't know what the mini pet would be; unlike the token given away at BlizzCon last year, which clearly indicated the redeemer would receive a Murloc Costume, this one was a mystery.

Blizzard Community Manager, Bornakk, has just announced what the mystery pet is, and I bet all Hell is going to break loose when the demand for these cards goes through the roof...

As gamers around the world have noticed, there has been a lot of "high quality rumours" running around on what game Blizzard will announce at WWI this year, reported on numerous sites, as well as N4G as well. Many are "sure" about Diablo 3, and most voices saying that a StarCraft MMO or new IP will come have been squelched.

The Blizzard splash image has also sent fans rampant with speculation on what it can mean, with vocal voices from all three of Blizzard's IPs. Everything from the WoW movie, Lich King-related, StarCraft or Diablo.

Diabloii.net, a 10 year running Diablo fansite, which (at least used to) have contacts inside Blizzard have now proclaimed that it IS indeed Diablo 3 that will be announced at WWI, and are taking questions from fans who would like them answered this weekend.

The Blizzard Splash Screen they are showing this week before WWI contains the obvious "ice" image, with strange runes. What some people don't know is that in the page's code, there are hidden images, and they seem to be pointing straight at an ex-Blizzard artist (or perhaps not so "ex" any more).

Blizzard Entertainment announced the Diablo II Ladder Reset will take place on June 17th, taking servers down for a 6 hours maintenance. This takes place 11 days before the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals, and no updates on the patch in development have been made, causing rumors, uncertainty and expectations toward the unconfirmed Diablo III announcement.

Recent rumours that Diablo 3 will be announced in the next issue of the US edition of PC Gamer have been debunked by the magazine.

"We're officially squelching the Diablo rumour," said the editor to Voodoo Extreme. "We've got two big announcements coming in our August issue, but neither is from Blizzard."

Diabloii.net, one of the oldest and the biggest Diablo fansite out there, has naturally taken on the mantle for Diablo 3. Looking at all the fansites, it seems a new Diablo 3 buzz wave is on it's way, and according to Alexa, the Diablo community is reaching the size it had back in 2002! If there ever was a good time for Blizzard to announce Diablo 3, it's now.

Awaiting this announcement that hopefully will come on WWI 2008 in Paris, there has been a huge compilation of Diablo 3 facts on Diabloii.net's Diablo 3 information page. It contains the entire timeline and events, including Flagship-related, as well as known project statuses from sources of information reaching from today back to '00. They report:

Blizzard has just announced that they sold out all the tickets for the World Wide Invitational in Paris this year.

WoW IncGamers got a sniff from Blizzard that they are going to hold another World Wide Invitational (like a mini-BlizzCon for the gamers and the games industry) in late June this year. Considering that StarCraft II was release during the WWI 2007 in Korea, one wonders what this one in France will give. The Diablo II ladder will be reset on June 25, 2007, beginning a new ladder season and providing a fresh start for those participating on the ladder realms. All current ladder characters will be moved to the non-ladder realm, and the ladder realm will re-open as a blank slate where all-new heroes can make their mark. Try out a new character idea, adventure with your friends, and race to be the first on your realm to reach level 99. The realms will be offline for approximately four hours during the ladder reset. Once the specific schedule for the reset has been determined, we'll post that information in the Battle.net Status Forum.

Red 5 Talks MMOs, $18.5M Investment (News)

Red 5, a young indie studio formed by key World of Warcraft dev team members, has raised $18.5 million in VC funding. Next-Gen spoke with CEO Mark Kern about the deal and Red 5's vision of the MMO.

When World of Warcraft team lead Kern, art director William Petras, Blizzard Korea founder Taewon Yun and other talented game developers gathered to found Red 5 in September 2005, interest was certainly piqued. After all, Red 5 is home to some of the guys that worked on blockbusters like World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Warcraft III and Diablo II. You familiar?

So now Red 5 appears to be the most recent indie to benefit from a good chunk of VC funding. Kern said that the money is not actually for title development, but to build Red 5's platform. "We're not really a PC company or a PlayStation or 360 company," he said. "We're really about building an MMO as a platform. Because you've got essentially what's a supercomputer on the backend, the question for us as game makers is what to do with that. We've barely scratched the surface."

He added that the investors, Benchmark Capital and Sierra Ventures, have relevant experience in the tech area. Benchmark has invested in companies including JAMDAT, Linden Lab (online game Second Life) and eBay, while Sierra invests across a wide range of sectors...
