DC Universe Online Launches Facebook Contest to find Animators (News)

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and Mass Animation have announced the DC Universe Online Animation Contest. The DCUO Animation Contest is version 2.0 of the acclaimed Mass Animation Facebook application and will give DC Comics fans, gamers and animators a chance to animate heroes and villains from the DC Universe Online game currently in development by Sony Online Entertainment, and to collaborate in creating a CGI trailer and in-game character animations. The DCUO/Mass Animation contest is scheduled to launch on December 7, 2009.

"The DCUO/Mass Animation contest takes a part of the game out of the development studio and puts it in the hands of fans, an empowering opportunity for our community," said John Smedley, president of SOE. "Players will have a chance through qualified contest submissions to be involved with the game's development at a deeper level than ever before by animating actions for in-game heroes and villains."

SOE Reveals Two Characters for DC Universe Online (News)

Sony Online Entertainment has finally shed some light on the long in development DC Universe Online by revealing two of the characters featured in the game.

The Green Arrow and The Green Lantern join the long list of characters who will appear in this game. For all the details of both characters, jump to the site.

DC Universe Online is an upcoming cross platform MMO between the PS3 and PC where players can take control of their favorite DC characters and protect the city of Metropolis.

DCUO continues to be on my short of list heavily anticipated titles right up there with Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Onelastcontinue had an opportunity to talk to Wes Yanagi, Senior Producer at Sony Online Entertaintment at Gamescom 2009, go hands on with the game, and came away impressed despite the game still being in pre-alpha. A year after unveiling "DC Universe Online" to fans at Comic Con, Sony Online Entertainment is beginning to talk about the game's early story lines. Speaking exclusively to The Cut Scene, the company has unveiled the heroes and villains you'll meet as you start the game – and what your first mission will be.

A little refresher first, though, for those who aren't up to speed on the game:

"DC Universe Online" is a massively multiplayer online game for both the PC and PlayStation 3 that will blend action and role-playing elements. Players can choose to be a hero or villain in one of several cities, including Metropolis or Gotham City.

He destroyed the Superman and Batman's multiverse and brought Optimus Prime back to life. Now Marv Wolfman is part of the writing team for the super-hero massively multiplayer online super-hero game, "DC Universe Online."

Last week, Stephen Totilo spoke to comics writer Marv Wolfman about his involvement in the DC Comics MMO "DC Universe Online." (He did so after giving him grief about how he brought Optimus Prime back to life in less than stellar fashion back in the 80s). Wolfman is a highly-regarded veteran comics writer whose most famous work is the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" mini-series that re-booted the DC Universe in the mid-80s.

There hasn't been too much said about travel powers beyond flight and super-speed in DC Universe Online. Massively already knew that speedsters were going to be able to run up and down walls, but that was it. Chris Cao has taken care of their limited information with a DC Universe Online official blog post that reveals a new travel power and some more details.

The new power in question is acrobatics, which features things like double-jumping and air dashes. Chis also mentions that players would be able to "stick to an underpass" which should give Spider-man fans reason to be excited. Not that anyone should expect web slinging in DCUO, but it sounds like they'll be the next best thing.

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley spoke to MTV Multiplayer in a post-New York Games conference interview to talk about their plans for future MMOs under their wing. Smedley clarifies a few things; the PlayStation 3 versions of The Agency and DC Universe Online will arrive the same day as the PC version, there's "a chance, maybe" Sony will use a non-subscription-based model for their upcoming MMOs, and finally, the Smedley confirms that "all of SOE's MMOs will appear on consoles from now on."

Jared explains that 'you can choose from a variety of body sizes, silhouettes and hairstyles', which isn't much of a surprise; however, DCUO will feature something neither CoX nor CO have, which is costume pieces limited by origin. 'If you are a tech-based character (like Cyborg) you will have different costume options than a magic based character (like Dr. Fate).' Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today that SCEE has joined forces with Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) – developer of groundbreaking online Massive Multiplayer Online (MMOs) games including the wildly popular EverQuest® -- in an arrangement that will bring a whole new dimension to PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) gaming.

Under the new agreement, SCEE will publish and distribute three MMOs developed by SOE for PS3 throughout the PAL territories. In addition, SCEE will also publish the PC versions of DC Universe and The Agency on behalf of SOE in the PAL territories. The new arrangement allows SCEE to benefit from SOE's experience in a different area of video gaming publishing, one which opens up a whole host of possibilities for PS3.
