Crysis breaks the ice

New video shows chilling frost effects in action

Sept 14, 2007

If you’ve been eagerly following the news on Crysis, you may be getting tired of seeing more footage of the game’s opening level on the beach. Crytek’s latest Crysis video is still showing off the same old area. But wait, this time they’re toggling the frost shader on and off. Be still our beating hearts.

All sarcasm aside, Crysis still manages to look hot even with all that snowy weather. In our most recent preview we were particularly impressed with the way light reflected off the beads of water that drip down your screen when you emerge from the ocean, creating a subtle and oh-so-pretty rainbow effect.

If you look carefully, you can see the frozen equivalent of this as frost builds up on your Nano suit’s visor. EA representatives have stressed that Crysis’ performance will be scalable, so even if you’ve got a less than stellar rig, you should be able to run it. But we’ve got this sinking feeling that only those who have recently plunked a few grand into a new rig will have the luxury of fiddling with all the graphical icing on this Crysis’ cake.
