It doesn’t always make itself easy to like, and it’ll die on the vine unless it gets more areas to quest in and endgame content pretty damn soon, but it’s a fun break from the normal MMORPG template, and even with its problems, worth checking out.

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s… some character you created in a videogame. And that’s all you need to do to get started in the upcoming massively multiplayer, cel-shaded superhero RPG Champions Online, which we played last week during a visit to developer Cryptic Studios.

What superpower would you have? Us? We’d probably have to plump for invisibility because you can’t kill what you can’t see, and someone has to watch over Veronika Zemanova as she goes through the dangerous process of trying on lingerie. And, as luck would have it, in the forthcoming MMO, Champions Online, you’ll be able to live out these superpower-wielding dreams without the fear of arrest.

For Cryptic Studios, men in tights are serious business. Cryptic established itself as a force for good in the MMO world with City of Heroes and its sidekick standalone expansion, City of Villains, but in hindsight, those games seem like mere proof-of-concept for Champions Online, Cryptic’s next superhero MMO opus.
