MTV Multiplayer Writes:
Get ready for a twist, "Call of Duty" fans.

Even though the new "Call of Duty: World At War" is succeeding with consumers and critics by sticking to the successful adrenaline-fueled formula of its franchise predecessor, new downloadable content coming to the game in 2009 will represent a break from 2007's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare."

How much of a break from the "Modern Warfare" DLC will it be?

In a phone interview with MTV Multiplayer just before Thanksgiving, "World at War" executive producer Daniel Suarez confirmed that the game's development team is working on downloadable content that will exceed the single multi-player map-pack offered for "Modern Warfare" earlier this year. "We want to do at least - the hope is - potentially two, maybe three packs out before we're all said and done."

Suarez said announcements of the downloadable content would be coming at the beginning of the New Year. While he declined to provide a release schedule, he offered this surprise: "It's not going to be what we've done traditionally. I'll leave it a little bit mysterious."

What was "traditional" for "Call of Duty" would have to be what was done for "Modern Warfare." That consisted of four multiplayer maps released five months after the base game launched. What could the new approach be? Downloadable content for the single-player campaign instead of just multiplayer map packs? New armament? New music? A map editor? "Call of Duty" fans should start guessing.

But here's one option fans shouldn't consider: the content won't involve a cross-over with "Modern Warfare." I asked if the development team on "World at War" was exploring an option to bring the weapons and maps of these two most recent "Call of Duty" games into one mes...
It really seems like Treyarch have pulled through this time delivering a World War II experience that we can all appreciate. If simply playing the game is not enough, PC gamers have been given a gift that will surely bring a whole new level of creativity to the table. Released today are the mod tools (1.1 GB) allowing anyone willing to do so to create all new levels, and mods for both singleplayer, and multiplayer game modes."

The latest Call of Duty, developed over the last two years by Treyarch – not series creator Infinity Ward – is a brutal slog through a WWII setting unlike any other. You may think you’ve ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ when it comes to this particular global conflict, but after five minutes in either the blood-soaked single player campaign or the frenzied multiplayer you’ll realise that this is far from your average, tired WWII shooter. ...

The nice people at Treyarch noticed the problems early enough, allowing you to download a pretty large patch, which will fix a number of the issues, right alongside your purchase.

Some of the most important repairs will be modifcations to co-op, single player, and multiplayer, a new patch notifier, holes in multiplayer maps fixed, and spawning improvements as well as weapon balancing. As we said earlier, the patch needs a pretty hefty amount of space on your hard drive for a quick fix, 317 MB, but no matter the size, it seems like a must to download for the best gameplay experience."

David Vonderhaar, Multiplayer Game Design Director for developer Treyarch, was on hand to autograph copies of the game and GameStop gift cards were awarded to tournament participants. Additional prizes were raffled off through the night and GameStop later donated the six Xbox 360 units used in the competition to the 29 Palms base..."
After you escape and begin to work your way through the beach huts, keep your eye out for a Marine going hand-to-hand with a fiery Japanese soldier – save him and you unlock an achievement. The next tricky part is the ambush in the jungle, which you can beat by taking cover behind the burnt hut. ...

Bowling even referred to Heller as the "senior super douche" in a blog post.

The senior producer with Activision has sought to calm down the waters by pointing out, in a Gamasutra interview, the way the two studios which work on the Call of Duty franchise collaborate and compete with each other in order to create the best product that fans can thoroughly enjoy."

From OXCGN:

"We asked the guys at OzBoxLive if they wouldn't mind doing a little feature on it if they were heading over that way. Cam was nice enough to dedicate many hours to the task and slave away to bring you this report.

The turn out was huge, the Call of Duty Girls circled for two 8 hour shifts, taking photos and generally looking really good. Which was noticable distraction for some gamers as they walked around the Swinbourne Event area.

As the night grew on it was increasingly difficult to get a machine and play, especially in the P.C section.

At around 11pm a fire alarm was tripped and every one was told to leave the building until the all clear was given. Added a good mix up to the night as it got some of the hardcore gamers off the machines and gave a chance to some other people to enjoy the game."
We've all been over the morality discussion of World War II games, or any game that simulates an actual war in which real people we know fought. For this genre, that hard rock accompaniment to Call of Duty: World at War's launch trailer is atrocious, and I certainly hope it's not going out on television (where the trailer is much better). "NO RULES?" Is this a UFC montage? "NO FEAR?" What, we're reducing World War II to a rear-window sticker in a white trash lowrider?

The successor to the exceptionally successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has been given odds of 5-2 to take top spot. The result may come as little surprise to some observers; Modern Warfare was the best-selling game of 2007 and has sold over 10m copies worldwide. Publisher Activision is certain to hold a comprehensive advertising campaign during the build-up to Christmas.

Videogamer writes: "Treyarch has announced that in the upcoming Call of Duty World at War on PC players will have access to friends lists and an invite system, similar to that usually seen in console titles.

In order to implement this function Treyarch says it's having to change the way the game authenticates the user. In CoD World at War the player will be authenticated in-game against a global master server which keeps track of and maintains unique profile names which are tied to a user's CD key.

A username and password will not be required to play, but each user will have a globally unique profile name."

If history is any indication, the beta should be coming out VERY soon. The COD4 PC demo was released on 10/12/2007 and the full game shipped on 11/6/2007.

Treyarch has revealed details about the Call of Duty: World at War Limited Collector's Edition, due to ship alongside the game when it launches on November 14th.

The Limited Collector's Edition comes packaged in a metal storage tin big enough to store multiple games in. So if you were ever looking for a solution to transporting all of your Call of Duty's together, here it is.

The only other physical item included with the limited edition is a branded steel canteen. The other bonuses are all digital items to use in game, including the powerful FG 42 Machine Gun being unlocked from day one, a VIP status tag for use in the online multiplayer modes, and an exclusive double experience week.

So far we've only seen shots of the Xbox 360 and PC Limited Collector's Editions, so it's unclear as to whether it'll be available on other platforms.

We know you have a ton of questions about the upcoming CoD: WW Beta, so we put together a quick FAQ on the Xbox 360 Beta. Stay tuned, we're in the process of developing a much more in-depth FAQ on the PC and Xbox 360 Betas.

QUESTION: What is the CoD: WW Xbox 360 Beta?
ANSWER: Treyarch is recruiting dedicated Call of Duty fans of to help test Call of Duty: World at War's performance from a gameplay and backend standpoint. Feedback and performance data from this Beta will be instrumental in ensuring CoD: WW's success from Day One! This Beta will have a limited space so make sure you get your name in the hat to get a token!

QUESTION: Will there be a PS3 beta? If not, why?
ANSWER: No, there won't be a PS3 beta. The Xbox 360 and PC environments will provide the feedback that we need to make any back-end technical modifications to the co-op and multiplayer features, which means an optimized experience for everyone, independent of the console they own.

Edge writes: "Activision raked in millions in sales with 2007's Call of Duty 4, but the publisher sees more opportunities beyond the retail box with the upcoming sequel.

"We ... see strong opportunities to monetize online gameplay," said Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during an analyst day on Monday. "The average Call of Duty player has spent nearly five full 24-hour days of their lives online since purchasing the game.

"Over time, we'll qualify more opportunities to increase the monetization of these activities."

Infinity Ward-developed CoD4 has paid downloadable maps available on digital storefronts, but with CoD5, developed by Activision studio Treyarch, downloadable content will be a considerably bigger priority."
Like all others in the past the box art shows off various soldiers shooting aimlessly in every direction, and screaming their lungs out. I wonder how long it will take before half of them realize their shooting in the wrong direction. Regardless you can get a full size look at the box art by click the above image. Also to note that this game will be following in the same foot steps as Modern Warfare, and will receive the all mighty M rating."

If you took today's news at its word, PlayStation 3 owners were being left out of the "Call of Duty: World at War" multiplayer beta.

Xbox 360 and PC players are allowed access in October. Last year, only Xbox 360 gamers were allowed access to the "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" multiplayer beta.

But Sony fans need not panic just yet. MTV Multiplayer asked Activision whether PS3 "Call of Duty" fans were being left in the cold.

The Call of Duty series is ones of Activisions most prised franchises. Famed for its realistic World War 2 combat, it was no wonder that many eyebrows were raised when Call of Duty 4 went modern...

"Viewers of CBS' Early Show yesterday were treated to a sight arguably more extraordinary than swimmer Michael Phelps' procurement of eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

To win eight gold medals, a man merely has to swim faster than any other man in the world. That's easy compared to what appeared to happen on the Early Show, when the producers appeared to bend the laws of space and time as they presented Phelps a copy of "Call of Duty: World At War" for the PS3 - a game that won't be released for at least another month or two, if not further into the future than that. The CBS host assured Phelps that Activision wanted Phelps to have the game first.

I asked an Activision PR rep yesterday how this happened..."
The PBY Catalina was an American flying boat of the 1930s and 1940s. It could be equipped with depth charges, bombs, torpedoes, and .50 caliber Browning machineguns and was one of the most widely used multi-role aircraft of World War II. PBYs served with every branch of the US military and in the air forces and navies of many other nations. In World War II, PBYs were used as anti-submarine warfare aircraft, patrol bombers, convoy escorts, search and rescue aircraft, and transports."
