Game developers are wrong about 90% of everything 83% of the time. I know, because I’m a super-expert on facts. My dad invented facts. So hold on to your sugary carbonated bevorage, uncross your legs and take your left hand off your face, because I'm about to drop a straight-up 10-megaton truth bomb on this bitch. All the subjective bullshit and “artistic license” that game designers cower behind is polluting the hard facts... ...

I’m not a miserable sexist ass; I’m just a practical observer. One thing I’ve observed is that men and women are different (I figured that one out pretty early on). Since I’m a rational person, I’m aware that nothing is entirely one way or another. Even the divide between life and death is ambiguous (uh, zombies, amirite?). ...

Gears of War, for example, was clearly designed with a co-op experience in mind – there are two main characters on the same mission with the same abilities with a strong personal bond. Blasting through the story with a friend lets you partake in that bond, which is a much more powerful experience than plain ol’ deathmatch or CTF. ...

Since then there's been a lot of talk about how the game's return to WWII after Modern Warfare is a bad move. Happily, fears proved unfounded, and the developers’ efforts were rewarded with the best-selling game this Christmas, shifting half a million copies in December alone on various formats. Still, no one’s perfect, and the devs should probably stay in their military issue flak jackets while we ponder some of the more common technical issues you’ve had with ...
The end credits of a game are usually by far the worst part. We're not talking about the game's ending here. Those can be spectacular. No, what we mean is the actual credits themselves. Not only are they the visual death toll of another game over, but all they offer you in consolation is the boring visage of a lot of names scrolling up the screen. And these days it's a lot of names. Back in the 8-bit home computer days we usually got away with one guy's signature on a title ...
Speculation that Call of Duty will return to WWII in CoD 5 is circulating the internet on the count of a job advertisement.

Treyarch, which is behind a number of games in the first-person shooter series, is advertising for a Call of Duty level designer and this particular part of the job description has leapt off the web page:

"Working experience with First-Person Shooter or Third-Person Shooter genres (console or PC). And if you're a fan of World War II shooters, then even ...
Trash talking players, who are constantly swearing or throwing racial insults at each other on Xbox live, have been this weeks hot topic; you only have to look at the recent report on Fox News for evidence of that. But one gamer seems to have taken it to a whole new level.

Yesterday we were enjoying another online CoD 4 kill-fest when we heard a chilling sound coming from one of our opponents headsets. But it wasnt the usual form of abuse our ears have to withstand, this time we ...
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the most outstanding games we've ever played - the single-player campaign is so loaded with pulsating set-pieces that the benchmark-raising brilliance of it all must make other shooters want to blow their own coded brains out in defeatist despair. But does Infinity Ward's masterpiece feature the most polished, tense and exciting level in gaming history? Well, PSM3 editor Dan Dawkins reckons it does.

In this blog post, Dawkins puts forward ...
An analyst for Nollenberger Capital Partners has gone out there and stated that he thinks Activision's awesome Call of Duty 4 will outsell Halo 3.

Todd Greenwald said, "Thus far, the game has an average score of 9.5/10 on Metacritic.com, which is almost unprecedented and puts it on par with Halo 3. It certainly is the highest-rated game Activision has ever created. Keep in mind, COD4 is launching on four times as many platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation3, PC, DS) as Halo 3 (360 ...
Modern Warfare has broken out! Huzzah! No, we're not consequence-dismissing warmongers, just excited gamers looking for a (decidedly non-lethal) way to vicariously live out our our battlefield fantasies. Because Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is on sale, and it's amazing.

But wait, recruit, because - as you might have seen - this latest Call of Duty conflict is so intense it'll make flower-gathering, Pinata-breeding gentle gamers soil themselves in utter shell-shocked terror. ...
One shot. Two if you're lucky. In Call of Duty 4's brutally realistic take on multiplayer, that's all your enemies need to drop your sorry corpse to the ground. Unlike the cartoony competition, you can't throw down a bubble shield or zip away on a shiny alien moped.

So how do you secure the advantage when all you have are your guns and your wits? Location, location, location. Being in the right place at the right time - in other words, being the one to shoot that first lethal ...
[Editor's Note, Nov 9, 2007: We've changed this game's score from the original 9 up to a 10. The reason is simple: the more we play the game, especially against real people online, the more we grow to love it and the less we mind its few faults. It's still not perfect or even particularly evolved from the first three CoD games, but it's nonetheless one of the most finely-tuned, expertly crafted games we've ever played, and we would be wrong not to give it our highest recommendation.]

Call of Duty has always been an exhilerating series, but Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is intense like you wouldn't believe. In fact, it's so intense that Infinity Ward want to "caution the weak gamers out there not to soil yourself when you see this game". Sheesh.

Actually, it's Infinity Ward's long term military adviser doing the cautioning. And he should know, having served in the US Army for more than two decades. Though he's now retired, so much less likely to kill you to ...
Call of Duty 4 may have taken us by surprise this past E3 (2007, if you're reading this years from now for some reason), thanks to one of the prettiest, most tension-filled demos in gaming history. But going into a recent all-day play session with publisher Activision, we knew what to expect: cutting-edge visuals and the most intense military action this side of actual deployment. But even with our expectations sky high, it blew us away. We'll talk about the hours spent squeezing ...
Word is circulating that Infinity Ward will release a post launch download for the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4 that'll add online co-op play.

Reported on Gameplayer.com.au, speculation was sparked by comments from the developer's studio head and president, Grant Collier, who spoke at a press event over the weekend.

"Uh, no, I'm not really supposed to say anything about that... but I'm a big fan of Xbox Live and downloadable content,” he responded to a general ...
Activision has divulged a mass media dump consisting of some really pretty screenshots for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The multiplayer beta's just kicked off in the United States but there's still no word on when or if European players will be able to score some hands-on time with the multiplayer unless they sign up for a US Xbox Live account.

We got a fresh look at the modern day four-quel at the Games Convention last week, and the RPG stat tomfoolery in multiplayer games ...
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare may have sent jaws to the floor during E3 with its tense single-player levels in realistic war zones, but the multiplayer was mostly a no-show. However, after getting a lengthy hands-on with the game's player-on-player action, we can say that it's just as impressive as CoD4's cinematic campaign - and addictive as all hell, to boot.

Granted, our short time with CoD4's multiplayer only showed us one game type - team deathmatch - and the game seems pretty sparse at ...
Activision has released an E3 trailer for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, due for release in the autumn on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It's barely been a year since CoD3, but remember - developer Infinity Spark has been working on this fourth title since the 2005 release of CoD2.

The trailer opens in Pripyat, a Ukrainian city on the outskirts of Chernobyl. Tanks rumble through dusky fields of tall grass, tracksuited rebels sprint through village streets and whole cities get ...
Activison and partner in crime Infinity Ward have stealthed out the first video of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's Xbox 360 multiplayer mode.

It's not especially long so it doesn't give away all of the CoD4's online secrets, but we've got no idea what the prompt to take the "coward's way out" is all about. Seppuku honor kills confirmed?

As for the single-player game, you'll be playing as a member of Force Recon and as an SAS operative against a bunch of naughty. Check out our preview for ...
Thursday 21 June 2007
If you were wondering, the new Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare footage has nothing at all to do with WWII. It takes you through a very intense minute on a modern-looking battlefield - and we do mean battlefield. It's clear that there is more than the typical "you and your squad vs the entire evil army" gameplay.

Instead of just your squad pushing the battle forward, there is a feeling of combat happening all around, soldiers fighting off in the distance, commands being ...
During our first look at Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare we got chance to sit down with the developer's president Grant Collier. In the middle of a lengthy global press tour, Collier looked absolutely exhausted, but it's amazing what some caffeine can do.

You can read our impressions of Call of Duty 4 right here, and below is the result of our chat with Grant Collier.

Are you missing World War II?

Grant Collier: I'm so sad that I can't work on World War II anymore; it just ...
Infinity Ward might have left World War II behind for its latest Call of Duty game, but this doesn't mean they lost their passion for the setting, the developer has revealed.

"We really like World War II. We wouldn't have worked on it for seven years if we didn't like it," the developer's president Grant Collier told us in a recent interview, before explaining that he doesn't think the World War II first-person shooter is dead.

Even the biggest fans of WWII first-person shooters have to admit video game companies are beating a dead war. Thank the big Sergeant in the sky that original Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward is bringing its unique brand of sweat-inducing, urine-causing FPS intensity to a setting in this millennium.

For Call of Duty 4, Infinity Ward fabricated its own fictional war. Studio head Vince Zampella says, "Today's real conflicts don't suit the Call of Duty style." That style deals with two equal ...
Ever wonder what's going on in the other side of the crisp looking helicopters you see in the Call of Duty 4 screens? Really, you have? Well wonder no longer, we have a brand new 3-D screen that gives you 360 degrees of the upcoming Call of Duty 4.

Who knows how this will factor into gameplay? What we do know is that it looks great and we can spin it around like were in the future. Our prediction, based on this screen, is that Call of Duty 4 will feature 3-D environments, helicopters and ...
Tired of killing Nazis? It seems that insurgents have usurped the Germans as the opponent of choice in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Moving away from the franchise's traditional World War settings, the first trailer features a variety a scenarios ranging from the cabin of a commercial airplane to the streets of what looks like a Middle Eastern city.

Publisher Activision doesn't win any points for originality with the game's subtitle and new present day setting, seeing as how competitor, ...
CoD 4 is being developed by Infinity Ward (responsible for the original Call of Duty game on PC and Call of Duty 2), and the video will show during the NFL draft on ESPN at 1pm EDT/10am PDT.

We're expecting to have the video shortly after its airing on ESPN.

In a post on its official forums, the developer has said, "Insert boring update about some mundane "what we're doing" detail that no one actually cares about (such as new employees or kleenex testing) because they're just reading these updates for the glimpse hope that we'll slip and say something ...
Truth is, although Treyarch did an excellent job on Call of Duty 3s single-player game, it was held back by irritating vehicle sections and super-linearity. But online... man, we love it. So, with development of the Call of Duty series heading back to Infinity Ward (creators of Call of Duty 2 ) weve high hopes that they can up the game on single-player, pulling out the levels a bit and either making the vehicle sections and context-sensitive combat moments brilliant or dropping them ...
