Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

Also known as: BiA

Fierce action and bro-bonding drama worthy of an HBO mini-series

A diverse variety of settings keeps the action from getting repetitive; Hell’s Highway starts off with familiar hedgerow combat in broad daylight (which shows off the dynamic lighting to great effect), but gradually transitions to more gloomy nighttime and rain-soaked missions. It’s a very deliberate transition - the not-so-subtle mood change reflects the twists and turns of the gripping story.

One day I was celebrated for liberating the town of Eindhoven in a radiant parade, and the next I was weaving through the burning wreckage of the same town after the Nazis retaliated with firebombs. Every mission in this game is grounded by a compelling story thread, whether it’s rescuing the wayward son of your local contact or chasing after one of your men who goes AWOL in the name of love. In fact, the best aspect of the game is how it never loses sight of its characters or the story, and forces you to face the taxing trauma of war as you watch buddies die.

In one cut-scene, a squad member remarks about how empty his jeep feels after a recent loss - those words are believable not just because of the superb voice-acting, but because the game succeeded in making me care for these fictional soldiers. Even if some of the plot is a little contrived and heavily inspired by HBO’s Band of Brothers, it still resonated with me right through the game credits.

The game benefits from excellent production values: best-in-class art direction, character animation, and graphics all contribute to the cinematic experience. Little details like dirt being splashed onto your screen and the shadow a soldier’s helmet casts over his brow really bring the game to life, and add up to make Hell’s Highway a tremendous success as a narrative-driven shooter.

PCG Final Verdict: 93% (excellent)

You'll love
  • Riveting tactical warfare
  • Diverse level environments
  • Ultra-cinematic story
You'll hate
  • Some linear level design
  • Teammates never run out of ammo
  • Final mission seems out of place

First!

Wonder why the PC version is better than the console's version. Hmm.

Sweet.

I really enjoyed the first two and was hoping they wouldn't f- it up with this one. I was pretty worried that they would dumb it down for the console crowds.
From what it sounds like here I won't be disappointed.

I bought it from Steam.
I like how dark and mature the storyline is.
The directing and voice acting are improved from the first two but are still a little flat.

The funniest thing about this GR review is that they don't mention ANYTHING about multiplayer. I find that funny because the multiplayer aspect of HH (which was designed by a DIFFERENT company) really isn't worth mentioning at all. A co-op mode would have been awesome, as would team battles, but the multiplayer is not even on par with CoD:4 or RB6V2.They completely missed a chance to make a good game great.
It is still worth it, especially if you were a fan of the first 2.

"Baker must lead his squad through one of the most punishing Allied defeats in World War II: Operation Market Garden." Actually, Market Garden was one of the least punishing "defeats" for the Allies during WWII, if you compare it to the fall of France in 1940, or the Nazi blitzkrieg that captured much of Europe between 1939 and 1943. How about the merciless crushing of the Warsaw uprising in the summer of 1944? I could go on and on... except that Market Garden wasn't even a defeat. Most of its objectives were taken. Only the British and Polish Airborne forces were mauled. The U.S. paratroopers survived to fight another day. Market Garden didn't "end the war by Christmas," but it sure helped liberate a lot of territory. That's not what I would call defeat.
