In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Ben Judd said that gamers now only want to die "once or twice" in games.

When we asked the Capcom producer if he reckons games are too easy on gamers these days, Judd replied: "Yes, I do. I think that if you look at one of the highest praised games of last year, BioShock, BioShock was easy as Hell, I don't care what anybody says. That's what people want. They want to play through it. They want to die once or twice. It's like an interactive movie, sort of. Gamers have lost their will to continually drill down on something."

"I can pretty much guarantee to you that if BioShock wasn't successful, there never would have been another game like this," Levine told Eurogamer in an exclusive interview. "I don't even know how we convinced people to pay for BioShock. These games had never made any money - everybody told us when we were pitching BioShock, sounds like a great idea, you'll sell 150,000 units - next!"

The job, Lead Multiplayer Designer, is described as requiring familiarity with the BioShock game. Could this be early indication than while 2K Marin are working on BioShock 2's main story, 2K Boston will be adding multiplayer?

PSU Writes:

According to Bioshock senior producer Melissa Miller, the PS3 version of Bioshock will only meet the same visual quality of that seen in Xbox 360 version.

"We're looking to match the quality of the original version," Miller commented. "We want to make sure that the water is just as great, and I think you can see from the demonstration, that it looks no different from the 360 version."

However one of our contributing editors, Dave Wales, got some hands-on time with the title at this year's E3, and he assured me otherwise.

"One of the very first things you'll notice within BioShock [PS3] is that all anti-aliasing issues are now gone. There were absolutely no edging issues or jaggedness to any portions of what was displayed on screen," said Wales. "I almost felt like I was staring at a redesigned title."

Game designer Jason Minkoff was comparing it to Damnation to illustrate that all you can do in the shooter genre is pour your heart into a project and hope it gets noticed.

Successful franchises spawn tie-in books dealing with the further adventures of Lara Croft or generic videogame action heroes, but often a respected author’s words can find themselves directly or indirectly rendered in gaming. Take Cormac McCarthy’s The Road for example, a post-apocalyptic journey through a near-future American wasteland that’s become required ...

Ken Levine re-negotiating contract with Take-Two (News)

Variety writes: "Have you been wondering why "Bioshock" creative guru and 2K Boston chief Ken Levine has been strangely absent from the press recently? Why "Bioshock 2" is being made at a separate studio and all Take-Two has said is that he "will be involved?" Why he wasn't available to talk on the record about the "Bioshock" movie? Why nobody knows what's up with him?

As several sources have confirmed for me, the answer is simple: Levine is re-negotiating his contract. Coming off the big commercial success (2.2 million units sold) and even bigger critical success of the game, Levine has become one of the very few recognizable and respected names in the videogame development community and he's trying to use that to get the creative freedom and compensation he feels he deserves. Take-Two, meanwhile, obviously wants to keep the guy on board, but is probably wary both of not spending too much money and also not setting a precedent that it will regret having to follow with the creative director of every successful game going forward."

DarkZero: It has been revealed that Gore Verbinski has been signed to direct the film version of Bioshock. Verbinski recently directed all three of Pirates of the Caribbean films. Those films went then on to get eleven Oscar nominations between them, and ended up winning one.

"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," said Verbinski. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."

Welcome to the Rumour mill, VideoGamer.com's run-down of the big rumours currently doing the rounds in the video game industry. Every week we'll hunt down the juiciest stories and give our opinion on how legit they are. So, whether you want the ridiculous or the plausible, read on.

BioShock not coming to PS3

The Rumour: Contrary to popular belief, 2K Games' BioShock or its in-development sequel are not coming to the PlayStation 3. They will remain Xbox 360 and PC exclusive. This is due to Microsoft paying for exclusive rights and the extra effort required of a PS3 port.

Verdict: This one comes from rumour blogging legend Surfer Girl and goes directly against the Rumour from EGM that claimed the original game was heading to the PS3.

"BioShock is still not coming to PS3 nor is there plans for a PS3 version of its sequel," reads the blog.

Given BioShock's huge success on the Xbox 360 it's perfectly reasonable to expect Microsoft to want it to remain a platform exclusive. With so little known about the sequel, though, it's a little early to be saying it's a guaranteed exclusive.

Plausibility rating: 3/5
After all, 2K Boston's critically acclaimed title moved from the console to the PC, and a code snippet found in configuration files for that port last year listed PS3 settings. Now, according to the upcoming issue of EGM, the move to Sony's system could be coming this fall.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 in development

The Rumour: Final Fantasy designer Yoshitaka Amano has joined Ubisoft and will be working on Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Verdict: It's a title fans have been crying out for and we'd certainly love to see a sequel, but Ubisoft hasn't so much as hinted that a sequel to its 2003 action adventure title is coming. Despite almost unanimous critical praise the game wasn't a commercial success and with so many blockbuster franchises in the Ubisoft locker it would be a risk to choose this over a new game in a franchise with a stronger fan base.

"I talked about how the very basic plot of your game has to be very, very simple so people who are not inclined to care about your story can follow it. In BioShock it's

Act 1: Get to the sub

Act 2: Kill X

Act 3: Kill Y [edited out the names in case you haven't played it yet]

However, once people are attached to those primal threads, they can, IF THEY CHOOSE, go deeper."

What makes a good video game? Strong visuals are important. Good controls are essential. A well-crafted concept helps too. These days, most games can boast at least two-thirds of that criteria.

So, then what makes a game great? Feeling. Emotion. Surprise. Interaction. Even addiction. It's a magical feeling when a game offers all these elements.

Here are the titles L.A. Times deemed the best experiences of 2007. Admittedly, they didn't play everything (because that would probably be impossible), but of the titles that did cross their paths, these are the ones that resonated most. Their favorites in order:

Best of the Year:
¿ BioShock
¿ Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Assassin's Creed
¿ Super Mario Galaxy
¿ The Orange Box

Honorable Mention:
¿ Halo 3
¿ Rock Band
¿ Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
¿ Cooking Mama: Cook Off
¿ Lost Planet

Worst of the Year:
¿ Lair

Dishonorable Mention:
¿ Fusion Frenzy 2
¿ 300: March to Glory
¿ Tenchu Z

The entire presentation, from the story to the visuals to the acting, encourages a level of emotional involvement that transcends the game play. The bonus is that the game play is nearly as good as the story. Play it.

The New York Times - Seth Schiesel, December 23, 2007:

For gamers 2006 was all about the introduction of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii systems; there weren't many great games released. This year, by contrast, has delivered one fabulous interactive entertainment experience after another. Even without Grand Theft Auto IV, which was delayed until next year, 2007 has witnessed the strongest lineup of new games since the fall of 2004, when Halo 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and World of Warcraft were introduced.

Even with heavy hitters like Spore, G.T.A. IV and Super Smash Bros. on the horizon for 2008, it will be tough for next year to top the crop of 2007. Here are some of this year's most important, intriguing and just plain amusing games and developments:

¿ Best Newcomer
¿ Most Difficult Delivery
¿ Best Adaptation of an Adored Intellectual Property
¿ Best Unambitious Representations of the State of the Art
¿ Best Single-Handed Rescue of a Major Game System
¿ Game of the Year

"It's Friday and we're all still reeling from the news that NPD numbers won't be gracing us in the weeks ahead, but as the latest issue of EGM falls into subscriber hands, the Quartermann's able to bring you the latest rumors. And lest we forget, Quartermann was right on the money about Bionic Commando.
This month, an old rumor resurfaces in a new form, as BioShock is apparently back on for PlayStation 3. Previously, it'd been speculated that Microsoft tied up 2K Games' aquatic adventure as an exclusive, but there's a change in the tide, as the world rapture may be Cell-enabled in 2008, after all."

The postmortem, written by 2K's Alyssa Finley, is described by the Game Developer editors as follows: "Iterate, iterate, iterate. That's the message from 2K Games' BioShock postmortem - from the game's humbling early user tests to the last-minute spit and polish, iteration saved the day for this artistically excellent title. That, and an Australian team that could work while the main team in Boston was sleeping."
BioShock could well be the recipient of download content that boosts the first-person shooter's replayability factor. Considering how complex the game's evolution was, there's no telling how expansive new content could be.

"I'm not a really big fan of expanding things just by linearly adding to the experience, adding a new campaign, as much as I am of enhancing the original experience and adding replayability to that experience," 2K Boston boss Ken Levine said.

Levine said that, ...
There's no multiplayer and the storyline doesn't lend itself to simply dropping in additional "levels." At the same time, unless you're interested in unlocking all the achievements, there isn't much motivation to play through the game a second or third time -- but creator Ken Levine of 2K Boston envisions that as how he'll approach the game's DLC.

Where have all the elves gone?

That's the question gamers and the people who love them are bound to ask this fall as they take in the latest crop of big-budget video games. Since the 1970s, dragons, orcs, wizards and dwarfs have been staples of interactive entertainment, yet this holiday season there are hardly any top new games in the traditional fantasy mode.

Instead 2007 has been dominated by perhaps the deepest lineup of science fiction games ever.
A tool that addresses activation issues with the PC version of Bioshock can now be downloaded.

You may recall that when BioShock released, the game's SecuROM copy protection came under fire for, among other things, only allowing two simultaneous installs of the game on different PCs and problems the copy protection raised with reinstalling it.

"Also, we have in the works a revoke tool which you will be able to run on your machine if you want to free up that key and move it to ...

Clint Hocking: "To cut straight to the heart of it, Bioshock seems to suffer from a powerful dissonance between what it is about as a game, and what it is about as a story. By throwing the narrative and ludic elements of the work into opposition, the game seems to openly mock the player for having believed in the fiction of the game at all. The leveraging of the game's narrative structure against its ludic structure all but destroys the player's ability to feel connected to either, forcing the player to either abandon the game in protest (which I almost did) or simply accept that the game cannot be enjoyed as both a game and a story, and to then finish it for the mere sake of finishing it".

Read on to find out more of what the Creative Director on Far Cry 2 had to say.
What other game has dared to throw so many bizarre oddities - killer diving suits, cannibalistic little girls, underwater utopias, gene splicing drugs - together in one package? More importantly, what other game succeeds at being this crazy and, at the same time, this believable?

To fully understand and appreciate BioShock's unique achievement, though, you have to know how it started. How it ...

BioShock was one of the most anticipated titles of 2007, and rightfully so -- the blend of briskly paced action and emotionally engaging story redefined the FPS genre and attracted many players that had never played shooters before. Little do most casual fans know that BioShock once had nothing to do with Big Daddies, Little Sisters or even an underwater metropolis.

"By now you've probably heard of the 360 first-person underwater adventure game BioShock. Or read about it. Or (if you're smart) finished it. But for the uninformed: Would you kindly go play it already? Thanks. Just don't expect to play it on the Playstation 3. See, my spies let slip that Microsoft handed publisher 2K a mammoth moneyhat to keep BioShock out of Sony's waters. And the extra content originally planned for the PS3 version? You just might see that on a potential Game of the Year edition for the 360."

There is a story currently popping up all over the Internet about a Kansas teenager who supposedly strangled his little sister thanks to influences from BioShock. Aside from the fact that it's the most ridiculous story ever conceived, it has been confirmed by Destructoid's Joe Burling to be completely false. Already circulating Webs, the tale is getting somewhat out of hand and really isn't very funny anyway, due to the fact that it's so badly done.

Videogames are often criticised for negatively influencing the behaviour of their players, and the latest report from KCTV, telling the story of a Kansas teenager who nearly strangled his little sister after she interrupted him while he was playing 2K Games' Xbox 360 masterpiece, Bioshock, isn't going to help the cause.

Violent videogame-hating attorney Jack Thompson has since released an ominous statement in which he says that "Justice will be served to the bastards that caused this crime."
BioShock could make its way to Wii, PS3, PS2 and handhelds, according to an analyst in a recent Take-Two report.

In a company update, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey banked on Take-Two extracting more from the success of the critically acclaimed BioShock, as well as the continued anticipation of GTA IV.

"We expect management could choose to raise capital now, leveraging a higher share price, investor enthusiasm over the GTA IV release, the franchise potential of BioShock and ...

Speaking of the much lauded BioShock, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey said that he thinks Take-Two could bring BioShock to PS3, PS2, Wii and handhelds some time during the company's 2009 fiscal year. In addition, he noted that the next game from 2K Boston/Australia could be released during FY09 as well. Another big contributor, according to Hickey, will be Mafia 2, which "likely will go platinum."

As part of the publisher's turnaround, Hickey believes Take-Two is also going to start raising additional capital in advance of the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV next year. "Additional capital could be used to insure liquidity for working capital needs, fuel potential studio acquisitions, and fund future development projects," he said.
