PC - BioShock - MS Game Division Success Unlike its predecessor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is bringing in some serious cash. Microsoft recorded record revenues for the three months ending December 31, 2006. The company's Entertainment and Devices Division (which includes Xbox 360 and the newly-released Zune) brought in $2.94 billion, a 76 percent rise in revenue over the same three-month period last year. Despite the healthy revenue stream, the division suffered a net loss of $286 million, equivalent to the same losses suffered the year prior.

In the quarter, Xbox and PC game revenue increased by $1 billion and 4.4 million 360s were sold. To date, Microsoft has sold 10.4 million Xbox 360s, topping its own forecast of 10 million units by this time. The software giant can find encouragement in the financial success of Xbox 360 during a period that saw the launch of two competing consoles.

Microsoft expects increased profitability over the second half of its fiscal year thanks to increased availability of Xbox 360. The June release of BioShock shouldn't hurt either.

Overall, Microsoft's profits were down 25 percent for the quarter.

Developer, Irrational Games' intensely anticipated PC and Xbox 360 underwater blastathon, BioShock, won't have any multiplayer features and will only use online for downloadable content. This flotsam of news has surfaced from a Q&A on the game's official site, which explains: "BioShock features a compelling storyline that revolves around the experiences of one man as he enters the decaying world of Rapture. Having a multiplayer component would have compromised the story we were trying to tell ... » Read More

PC - BioShock - No Multiplayer For Bioshock Take a deep breath guys. You could potentially end up choking on a lot of seawater after hearing this. Elizabeth of 2K Games has posted a full Q&A entry on their site to answer some of the more popular questions surrounding Bioshock (for the PC and 360). The most interesting tidbit down the list is:

"There will be no multiplayer. BioShock features a storyline that revolves around the experiences of one man as he enters the decaying world of Rapture and having a multiplayer component would have compromised the story that was to be told so the decision was made to keep this game as a single player experience. There will be an online component, however, where new content can be downloaded."

Friday 29 September 2006 It's not often promo footage has us squirming in our seat (and still wanting to play the game afterwards) but this BioShock teaser from Microsoft's X06 conference reel is just that kind of footage. Check the movies tab to watch it for yourself, but be aware it's very much intended for a mature audience. Though it's not a gameplay sequence, it's representative of the uncomfortable situation you're forced into in BioShock - whether you can bring yourself to hunt Little ... » Read More

Irrational Games showed up at X06 packing a new build of the creepy first-person shooter BioShock, freshly confirmed as an Xbox 360 and PC exclusive title. We sat in on the presentation to learn whatever we could. If you have seen the latest trailer of the game (it's here [PC, 360]on GamesRadar, and it's super disturbing, so you should), you see a little girl hiding in a tube. The first-person protagonist pulls her out and, while he is seemingly prepared to strike at the little girl he ... » Read More

Thursday 28 September 2006 Continuing the theme of laser-targeted exclusives at Microsoft's current X06 conference, upcoming horror-FPS BioShock was confirmed to be an exclusive release for 360 and PC when it arrives next year. That's not too much of a change from what we already knew, as a PS3 version was never officially announced - and Microsoft obviously knows that making the game exclusive to 360 would get their offices firebombed by the PC crowd (well, we say firebombed, we mean 'flooded ... » Read More

"We are going to drive a stake through the heart of FPS cliches." A declaration like this might normally seem arrogant, but Ken Levine, the Creative Director of the ambitious next-gen shooter BioShock, backs his words up with a gonzo demonstration. The narrated video that you can now see for yourself (by hitting the Movies tab at the top of the page) shows that Levine is serious about ending cookie-cutter AI, static environments and hallway-bound "rail shooters." BioShock's story centers on ... » Read More

Tuesday 12 September 2006 As you may have noticed, we're pretty excited about next year's horror-shooter BioShock - enough so to politely insist that you have a look at these latest screens on the images tab above. With the game being artistically inspired, having a brainy plotline and looking absolutely terrifying as it does, you could forget that it's still a shooter at heart. Handily, then, these shots show that the combat is every bit as vicious as the society-gone-wrong you'll be squaring ... » Read More

Blood, fire, violence, crazy dames stabbin' people with hooks - that's what we wanna see in our games, so today's batch of Bioshock screenshots make us smile... even if we're kind of revolted at the same time. These screens of the first-person creepfest are specifically labeled as PC shots, but we saw the game running on Xbox 360 at E3, and we'd say they're a fair estimation of what you'll see on both systems. Just hit the Images tab above to see them all. Bioshock's undersea world features a ... » Read More

It's not easy to get access to the BioShock theater deep in the 2K Games booth, but if you can get in, you'll see one of the best games of the show. The creators of the seminal spooky shooter System Shock 2 are calling BioShock the “spiritual successor” to the 1999 award-winner, but other than the pedigree and approach, the games are totally different. And BioShock is almost certainly unlike any first-person shooter you've seen. BioShock takes place underwater, in an abandoned, ... » Read More
