GN Entertainment today announced an exclusive North American third-party advertising partnership with Electronic Arts Inc., for Battlefield Heroes. Under the terms of the partnership, IGN will serve as the exclusive sales partner for all in-game brand integration and online advertising for EA's web-based, free-to-download, free-to-play arcade shooter.
The partnership represents the latest move of both companies to create breakthrough solutions for marketers and underscores IGN's strength and proven track record in serving the gaming community.

The mechanics of free-to-play online gaming is an inexact science - but clearly EA is doing something right. According to stats revealed by the publisher to IGN, Battlefield Heroes - its first foray into free-to-play microtransaction gaming - is currently taking in $20 per paying user on average.

The most popular items purchased by players are vanity costume items, making up 76 per cent of all transactions. Temporary bonuses account for 19 per cent, while emotes make up the remaining five per cent of purchases.

TVGB: "The browser-based Battlefield Heroes stealthily launched last week and has proven to be a fun little game to fire up every now and then when the boss isn't looking. The game is free to play but brings in the cash by asking a few dollars here and there for microtransactions like faster leveling up, clothing etc. Not a bad plan and one that more and more games are using these days. But it appeared as if EA had taken it to a bad place when MTV Multiplayer reported earlier today that EA is asking 420 Battlefunds, the game's currency that can be bought with real money, in this case ~$3, for each of the two of Michael Jackson's outfits."

I've found no big launch announcement, and other than the new trailer on the front page of the site, it doesn't seem like much fanfare is being made. If you would like to play, feel free and head on over and knock yourself out. Just be quiet, because we don't want to accidentally wake up the marketing team."

Well wait no more (ok, well maybe like 12hours), it will finally be back online Wed, Feb 11th as seen on their official website. Anyone that has a beta key already will be able to log on to the beta servers starting tomorrow.

As reported by shacknews last week Battlefield Heroes is expected to be released by April full scale. So we can not say for sure but we would expect a lot more people to be receiving beta keys in the next few weeks to help with the testing. If you have not signed up for a beta key yet then you might want to go here and do so now.

Big Download writes:
"It's been a while since there's been any real news on the Battlefield Heroes front. The upcoming downloadable multiplayer shooter from Digital Illusions and Electronic Arts had been in a closed beta for much of 2008 but near the end of the year the developers announced they were closing the beta test down to work more on the game's back end.

While there's still no word yet on when the beta test will resume (much less a final release date) the Battlefield Heroes web site is showing signs of new life lately, including a new post on how they are making the maps that will be put into the game. Map making for the game depends on several factors (Do we make the map with vehicles? How do we make the landscape natural?). before the final product is done. Of course the question we want answered is, "When can we play the game that the map is made for?" So far there's been no answer to that inquiry."
Grondal isn't a Battlefield developer veteran, instead having previously worked on Anarchy Online and Dreamfall at Funcom. As such, he brings a different mentality to the team working on Heroes, which he claims is a mixture of half newcomers to the series and half previous Battlefield developers.

Producer James Salt said in a post on the game's site that the game's closed beta would shut down at 6pm central European time - that's 5pm UK time - today, and not return until "early next year".
"We have received lots of great feedback from our beta testers. So much so that we are now ready to enter our next phase," Salt said."
Its most recent tour of duty, "Battlefield: Bad Company," has sold 1.6 million units worldwide since June.

The next war "Battlefield" has waged, however, is a guerrilla assault on the free-to-play games business model. The game's publisher, Electronic Arts, is the first major U.S. videogame company to launch a free-to-play game, and it unveiled user statistics on its pilot game, "Battlefield Heroes," Thursday.

Shacknews writes: "EA DICE's upcoming free-to-play PC shooter Battlefield Heroes has been delayed and is now expected to arrive late this year, publisher Electronic Arts announced today.

The ad-supported, web-based shooter was previously expected to launch this summer. During a conference call today, EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed that the game is now "launching at the end of the calendar year."

"We decided to increase its focus on some of the social networking features," Riccitiello noted, stressing that the studio hopes to incorporate beta tester feedback and implement new features. "The last thing we want to do is jab it in the marketplace."

Riccitiello seemed optimistic about the title's development despite the delay, adding that Battlefield Heroes "still feels like it's progressing much like we anticipated."

The game ¿ EA's first major entry into a market that is popular in Asia but still finding its feet in the West ¿ hopes to capture the imagination of those who can't afford the latest homes consoles, are intimidated by the idea of playing with experienced gamers, or who can only dedicate a small amount of time to playing videogames.

"So who is Battlefield Heroes for? The marketing guys love to come up with snappy titles for market segments. The market segment they came up with for us was 'frustrated restricteds' ¿ people who really want to play full games, and aspire to be gamers," Cousins told the attendees of GDC Paris during his keynote speech."

During a Tuesday keynote at the Paris GDC focusing on the future of core and casual, EA DICE Battlefield executive producer Ben Cousins said that the future of gaming is going to be about broader experiences with widespread appeal.
Discussing the studio's free-to-play "cartoon shooter" Battlefield Heroes, the former Lionhead and Sony employee said, "I think many people are underestimating, or are ignorant of these products."

QA Boss advises everyone who uses a single password for all their important logins, and used said password in the Battlefield Heroes beta signup, should probably change that password as a precautionary measure. Too bad, as our previous cipher was nigh uncrackable -- "drowssaP". It's "password" backwards! Brilliant, right?

Videogamer reports that A Xbox 360 version of upcoming free PC shooter Battlefield Heroes is unlikely because of Microsoft's control over Xbox 360 LIVE, according to developer DICE.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at an EA Games label event in London today, Ben Cousins, executive producer at DICE Studios, said that he didn't believe there would be any point in porting it to the PS3 or Xbox 360 because "Everyone's who's got a 360 or PS3 also will have a PC that can run this game".

Battlefield Heroes, set for a closed, invitation-only beta on May 6, will be a completely free, 250MB download. The game will make money through the sale of customisation options, like new clothes, and through advertising on its website.

DICE Studios, the developer behind upcoming free cartoony shooter Battlefield: Heroes, has defended its art style against accusations that it is a rip-off of Valve's game Team Fortress 2.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an interview at an EA Games label event in London, Ben Cousins, executive producer at DICE, responded directly to those who have claimed the game looks too similar to Valve's team multiplayer first-person shooter TF2, saying: "Those guys aren't artists."

He said: "If you asked our art director he would point out probably 200 differences in the art style between our game and Team Fortress. There are only two cartoony shooters out there and those are the two. If there were 50 cartoony shooters out there we wouldn't be having this discussion. No one says that Battlefield: Bad Company's ripping off Call of Duty because it's realistic."
James Salt here, Lead Designer on Battlefield Heroes. Those of you who regularly read the blog may remember Ben Cousins, the Senior Producer for Heroes, promised this blog would be about 'the importance of playtests and the design and development of the ability system'.

Unfortunately I have to start this blog by calling Mr Cousins a liar. It's not going to be about that. It's about our Character Customisation system.

So, why did we go and make a Character Customisation system? Well, as I was saying back in the blog 'Character Classes, Cameras and Computers'; we wanted you to own your own Hero. What better way to do that, than to make the game so you can decide exactly how your Hero looks?

Your decisions about how your Hero will appear start with the Create a Hero section on the website. You select a faction, a class, set some default characteristics (like skin tone, hair colour, hair style and facial hair) and finally, name your Hero. Once that's complete you can start the game and get into deciding on your Hero's weapons, abilities and clothing."

From the piece:

"Cousins explained that the game would depend entirely on the website adverts that players saw when launching the game, and during loading. "We won't be putting billboards in the game," he said, as the team wanted to preserve the clean, cartoonish world they've created. The crowd murmured as the game loaded and we were stuck looking at an advert for Crysis. "We've been known for our long loading times," Cousins jested. "Don't worry, we're going to optimise.""

- Entire game is 3rd person so you can see the customizations your player has. Also allows you to see your player blown into the air. If 1st person is really wanted it can be changed over time.
- Players have a lot more health.
- Weapons less lethal.
- Spawn time shorter (5 seconds).
- Firefights last longer giving time to use unlockable abilities.
- Vehicles spawn when you arrive at the point (no waiting).

* Low system requirements
* Will have more RPG elements (compared to Battlefield 2142)
* Crazy unrealistic feel similar to BF1942
* Quicker learning curve
* Remain true to core BF elements

"A few news sites seem to be reporting that Battlefield Heroes will not be available in Australia. This is most certainly not the case. Battlefield Heroes is available as a free download from the web, and as such would probably be available even if you connect to the internet via a satellite dish from a small unheated hut on the steppes of Uzbekistan."

Electronic Arts are nearly ready to unleash their Western foray into a revitalised and radical business model. This summer Battlefield: Heroes will be free and only downloadable from the internet.

In a venture hoping to bring in both gamers who are deferred by Battlefield's steep learning curve and those not willing to shell out £40 at every new release, Battlefield: Heroes has a broad visual appeal (akin to Team Fortress 2, but we'll let them off in sake of progress), 15 minute matches and hopes to strip the game of its frenetic confusion and brick-wall difficulty.

(See the first link at the Alternative Sources below for the link to the homepage of the game.)
