The Battlefield Podcast will reach its 100th episode this Saturday, June 28th, 2008. To celebrate this event, the show will be streamed online at www.tuxmedia.tv/live beginning at 2pm PST and lasting for several hours.

The afternoon and evening will be spent "shooting the breeze" with fans of the Battlefield Podcast as well as guest from the Battlefield community. The mics and webcams will be open for most of the duration of the live show, allowing visitors to chat with the Battlefield Podcast hosts and have their audio/video be streamed live online. The best live moments will be saved and edited into the 100th episode. To contact the live show, add the Skype username "tuxmedialive" or the Stickam username "bfpodcast". Throughout the event we are expecting several prominent guests from the Battlefield community, such as the hosts of the Inside Battlefield Show from NetGameRadio.com, and more. A giveaway contest is also scheduled during the evening that will result in the giveaway of several copies of Battlefield Bad Company. In order to receive a copy you'll have to watch the live show and look for instructions.

The final release of episode 100 is scheduled for early next week.

Novint to License Games From EA to Boost Support For Its Falcon 3-D Touch Controller (News)

Last week, Novint and Electronic Arts exclusively revealed to Newsweek's Level Up their agreement by which Novint will license several EA games, which Novint will then patch to support its Falcon peripheral. The titles which are being modified include Madden NFL 08, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08, Need For Speed ProStreet, Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142. Each of this titles has been previously released, but Novint CEO Tom Anderson hinted that the company might support EA's as-yet unannounced Need For Speed title for 2008.

What surprised Newsweek somewhat is that Novint will charge players who already own these games $9.99 for a patch (Anderson's own words) in order to make the games Falcon-compatible.

There is some bad information in there that I'll get to in a sec, but it was interesting to me because it highlights some pretty core differences in the approach that the Playstation folks have taken.

From the very beginning the team at Sony Computer Entertainment has always had a very open view of the the networked Playstation 3. This is showcased in our game Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. We've been able to integrate Xfire's new PS3 API into the game very easily (I should also point out that this API is absolutely free¿ no clue where Ozymandias got that info but it's just plain wrong). What this is going to do is allow an already huge network of online gamers on the PC continue to track their Xfire friends already as they play our (and other games in the future) PS3 game.

This is not a replacement for the PS3 friends list.

This is something over and above that. In this day and age many people are members of different communities. For example, I belong to a Battlefield 2 team and a guild for MMO's. The two are very different and I enjoy them both. Since people spend their time multi-tasking and switching between their computers and consoles, it just seems to make a lot of sense to me that it's inevitable that people are going to be a part of many different communities.

This open approach that allows licensed middleware providers to put hooks in PS3 games (assuming that's what the publisher wants to do) really opens a lot of doors that a more closed approach just wouldn't allow.

To me that's just plain common sense.

Online console games are going to be huge. They're growing at an extremely rapid rate...

All being well in the world of the interweb, you should now be able to grab the latest Battlefield 2 patch - version 1.4 - from ye olde usual download sites scattered around the, ah, interweb. The patch contains numerous bug fixes - like, excitingly, and we quote, "Another attempt at fixing the Red/Blue nametag bug" - and a couple of gameplay tweaks that have to do with crouching and tossing.
