Gamervision: As you might know by now, Gamervision takes Collector's Editions very, very seriously. You can be sure that at least one person in the office will be picking up one or another, and then chatting about it the following day. What can we say, we love plastic stuff! It's also cool to see developers try and one-up each other, each trying to give gamers more bang for their buck. As of now, the winner is likely BioShock, which came with a fantastic Big Daddy figure for a measly $10, or Modern Warfare 2 with it's night vision goggles, since, you know, they technically have a use outside of sitting on a shelf.

That crown might be shifting, however, since we've been sent some images of the new Assassin's Creed II Special Edition that make it look like the new lord of all things materialistic. Yes, yes, we already knew what was in the box, but the images below give a great sense of scale, and show exactly how awesome the $80 box is.
It's almost exactly two years to get Assassins Creed II made (which will be released on November 20). Though Creed fans may not have to wait too long to see something else based on the game.

In a new article lauding what it calls Ubisoft's "ascent" as it contends for third place (behind Electronic Arts and Activision) in the industry, Forbes heard from Ubi's North American president, Laurent Detoc, on its strategy for spacing the Prince of Persia games.

As the article points out, Ubi's first franchise re-up happened in 2003, followed by two more titles back-to-back. And then three years of radio silence. Why?

The publisher's doing well enough now financially, the article explains, that it doesn't have to rush out franchise follow-ups and can afford to cool its heels a bit in between to spur demand. Detoc also told Forbes that they can afford to whet your appetite for the next Assassin's Creed by making you wait:

"When we bring it back, there will be more anticipation for it," Detoc says.

Ubisoft said in an interview with PCGH that there are no plans at the moment to re-integrate the infamous DX10.1 support.

You might remember the whole discussion: Assassin's Creed was the first game that shipped with DX10.1 support (Radeon only, as Geforce cards currently stick to DX 10.0). And Ubisoft patched this support away so that Radeon cards got slower under Vista SP1.
Sadly, it is very likely that this game will be remembered for a controversy that dances around a strange decision to remove support for DirectX 10.1 and handed transferred an initial performance advantage for ATI's Radeon cards over to Nvidia. Did Nvidia have its hands in this one?

Videogamer writes: "Welcome to the Rumour mill, VideoGamer.com's run-down of the big rumours currently doing the rounds in the video game industry. Every week we'll hunt down the juiciest stories and give our opinion on how legit they are. So, whether you want the ridiculous or the plausible, read on.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 in development

The Rumour: Final Fantasy designer Yoshitaka Amano has joined Ubisoft and will be working on Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Verdict: It's a title fans have been crying out for and we'd certainly love to see a sequel, but Ubisoft hasn't so much as hinted that a sequel to its 2003 action adventure title is coming. Despite almost unanimous critical praise the game wasn't a commercial success and with so many blockbuster franchises in the Ubisoft locker it would be a risk to choose this over a new game in a franchise with a stronger fan base.

Plausibility rating: 2/5"

Kotaku reports that the arrival of Ubisoft's catalog on Steam continues to clunk along, as gamers hoping to be "one of the first to play the PC adaptation of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed" find themselves without a playable version. The PC port is currently on sale at traditional retail locations but the digital unlocking won't happen until 5 PM PDT, it seems. It's an unusual exception in the Steam world, where those awake at 12:01 PDT the day off can burn the midnight oil with their pre-loaded purchases.

The same holds true for Direct2Drive and Ubisoft's own digital store, should you shun Valve's service.

Megarom has announced that Assassin's Creed DS will be released this Friday across South Africa.

Assassin's Creed Altaïr's Chronicles is a Nintendo DS exclusive. It is a prequel to the console version of Assassin's Creed. Discover more about Altaïr as you travel through a 3D world, battling through four cities of the Crusade's Middle East.

South African gamers can also look forward to the PC version of Assassin's Creed, which will also be released this Friday. The PC version includes four PC-exclusive investigation missions, including the Rooftop Race Challenge and the Archer Stealth Assassination Challenge.

Assassin's Creed is set in 1191 AD when the Third Crusade was tearing the Holy Land apart, the Assassins were both shrouded in secrecy and feared for their ruthlessness. And after being forced to it nine times, this mechanic had outstayed its welcome for far too long.
Those specs were quickly pulled from the web, but Ubisoft have done the right thing and put them back up, with changes.

The differences are minor but they do bring the specs back down, closer to Earth!

From pc.gamezone.com:

"Today Ubisoft announced that Assassin's Creed for PC will be available at retailers nationwide in March.

Assassin's Creed for PC follows in the wake of the critically acclaimed and worldwide console hit Assassin's Creed, and will feature four brand-new exclusive types of investigations, providing even more ways for players to explore the various locations of the Third Crusade. Players will assume the role of the main character, Altair, and will work to stop hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict and experience the art of a master assassin. With more than 2.5 million units of the console versions sold to date in North America alone since its mid-November 2007 launch, Assassin's Creed for PC is set to expand upon this success. "

French publisher Ubisoft has announced its third quarter fiscal results for the all-important holiday period ended December 31, 2007. Sales climbed more than 44 percent to 450 million euros ($625.81 million), significantly better than the guidance Ubisoft had provided for 410 million euros (which itself had already been raised back on Dec. 13). For the first nine months of the fiscal year Ubisoft's sales were up an impressive 47.2 percent to 711 million euros ($988.78 million).

The publisher's solid performance and continued growth were largely driven by the success of Assassin's Creed, which sold five million copies, and its expanded casual business ¿ most notably its new Imagine line, which sold 2.5 million units. In Europe, Assassin's Creed was the best-selling game in 2007 for the PS3 and the second best-selling game on Xbox 360. In the U.S. it was the second best-selling game in 2007 for the PS3and the third best-selling on 360. Ubisoft also reported "excellent sales" for its other casual games series such as the Petz line and the My Coach franchise.
You're going to need a kick-ass PC boosted by a flux capacitor to get a decent frame rate in Assassin's Creed for PC if spec requirements published on the 'net are accurate.

"In order to play this game properly, your PC MUST meet or exceed these minimum requirements," a post on Ubisoft Solution Centre, before dropping the almighty bombshell:

These specifications are neck-and-neck with Crysis' minimums, even a bit beefier in some respects. If the performance of Crytek's FPS on sub-standard hardware is anything to go by, Assassin's Creed on PC will chug on a system with the aforementioned capabilities.

Game Critics Awards: "The judges of the Game Critics Awards are honored to announce the first annual Game of the Year awards. Considering games across all platforms, released commercially in North America between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, the judges have voted to decide on the best of the best for the year.

To arrive at the top ten games of 2007, the judges applied a points system. Each judge nominated 10 games and awarded a score between 5 and 30 points to their chosen games, with a total point allotment of exactly 100. The cumulative total for each nominated game was then calculated to generate the ten highest scoring games. More details are available in the rules section".

DS Fanboy:

"Does anyone else find it suspicious that Assassin's Creed is due out on the DS in one month and we still haven't heard even the most basic of information? We haven't seen one screen -- we don't even know what kind of game it is. We could interpret this seeming blackout in one of two ways: first, and most likely, that the game isn't actually going to come out next month; and second, that Ubisoft knows they have dead weight on their hands and hopes to slip it quietly out to stores, where people will buy it for the front cover."
Los Angeles Times: Best and Worst of the Year (News)

What makes a good video game? Strong visuals are important. Good controls are essential. A well-crafted concept helps too. These days, most games can boast at least two-thirds of that criteria.

So, then what makes a game great? Feeling. Emotion. Surprise. Interaction. Even addiction. It's a magical feeling when a game offers all these elements.

Here are the titles L.A. Times deemed the best experiences of 2007. Admittedly, they didn't play everything (because that would probably be impossible), but of the titles that did cross their paths, these are the ones that resonated most. Their favorites in order:

Best of the Year:
¿ BioShock
¿ Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Assassin's Creed
¿ Super Mario Galaxy
¿ The Orange Box

Honorable Mention:
¿ Halo 3
¿ Rock Band
¿ Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
¿ Cooking Mama: Cook Off
¿ Lost Planet

Worst of the Year:
¿ Lair

Dishonorable Mention:
¿ Fusion Frenzy 2
¿ 300: March to Glory
¿ Tenchu Z

From Official Bethesda Blog:
"Week after week, folks at the office were picking up the latest "AAA" titles to play, and as a result, I'm guessing most everyone now has a pile of games to play. Luckily, most of the big releases are now out, so we can put away our wallets and focus on the games we've got.

Here's what you'll see our team playing over the weekend."

Penny Arcade's Gabe writes: "I guess some guy at IGN is mad at me and he lays into me on their podcast. [...] Basically some IGN guy is super pissed because I said I didn't agree with the bad reviews of Assassin's Creed. I'm actually of the opinion that if we're pissing off IGN we must be doing something right.

Honestly my main concern was to make sure people didn't avoid the game based on some of the poor reviews."

"The IGN thing is just sort of silly. He says I should leave reviewers alone because I 'just do things and write things as a freaking comic artist.' I'm not sure how to respond to that. I think he's trying to insult me but everything he said there is true.

The sad thing is I wasn't even talking about their review. I was talking about the 7.0 from 1UP. No one actually pays any attention to IGN or their 7-10 review scale."

"Happy Thanksgiving from Slant Six! While we celebrated our Canadian turkey day earlier in October, we hope that you all have a great holiday. I have actually taken the week off to spend time with family and to play some games. I finally have some time to dig into my fearsome PS3 backlog, including Uncharted, Assassin's Creed and Motorstorm Devil's Weekend".

"Assassins Creed will definitely be up there; our audience have already heavily pre-ordered this and the sure scale of the experience is very cinematic, so will prove popular amongst film fans," Chris Bird, head of marketing services for LOVEFiLM, told GamesIndustry.biz.

"Kane and Lynch will also do well, as will Call of Duty 4. FIFA 08 and PES will also be 'must buy' for anyone getting a new console over Christmas."

Ubisoft UK boss Rob Cooper has been celebrating the sales success of Assassin's Creed ¿ and stated that it proves new IP can still shift serious numbers at retail.

"I think the success worldwide of Assassin's Creed absolutely proves that new IP can live and prosper within the sequel and licensed based competition," he told MCV. "The industry is crying out for new and compelling content and we're delighted that AC has lived up to its expectations."

"The launch of Assassin's has been a huge global success. There are a number of factors for this in the UK. One is that the game has gripped a nation of gaming consumers. With licensed or sequel based titles, it's easier to know what to expect, but with Assassin's Creed there has been a ground swell of excitement since we first showed it at E3 06."

Here's how Ubisoft deals with criticism:

A certain British gaming website had praised Assassin's Creed since it was announced. They'd run previews, interviews, did a lot to hype the game. When they played the final built, they finally realized it wasn't that great, so it got a 7/10. But instead of acknowledging AC's mistakes, Ubisoft got furious, pulled all ads from the site and cancelled all placed orders (mid five figures) indefinitely. A planned live interview with Jade Raymond isn't going to happen either. According to Ubisoft everything would have been fine though, if the site had just put an 8 instead of a 7 under the same text.

Wilson notes that not all games will be affected by insufficient retail space. "Clearly, the end-of-year squeeze creates limited space at retail, which limits the size of initial orders of games with less publicity and reorders of games with lower quality." He anticipates games with high preorder rates such as Guitar Hero III, Call of Duty 4, Assassins' Creed, Mass Effect, WWE, and Rock Band to be less affected by insufficient retail space. "Titles that could be at risk of getting squeezed," he continues, "include Haze, Kane & Lynch, and Uncharted."

¿ How the editorials at Ubisoft have power of life or death over any project in the company.

¿ How Martin Tremblay, former CEO of Ubisoft Montreal, was "asked to resign" because a certain then senior producer named Yannis Mallat could not stand him. (Mallat has connection to the the Guillemot family that owns Ubisoft; After Tremblay's departure, Mallat was promptly promoted to CEO.)

¿ How Mallat influenced the editorials to kill an unannounced "AAA" HUDless FPS.

¿ The early troubled development of Assassin's Creed, and its secret sci-fi twist.
Nov 01, 2007

We're pretty sure Jade Raymond got very bored of trotting out the same 'no comment' answer to the question that cropped up in pretty much every interview we attended with the Assassin's Creed producer. "Tell us about the twist," it would begin. "Is the game actually set in the future?"

It all stemmed from one of the game's earliest trailers (shown at X05) that hinted at a present day or even futuristic element to the plot, at odds with the Medieval setting. Raymond was always ...

"Assassin's Creed

Please note that the early review of Assassin's Creed that appeared here was published in error.

"[A Wii version] would be possible, but it would need changes to the gameplay, like the DS version. But that just wouldn't be the same experience. Unfortunately, the Wii just doesn't have the same performance as the PS3 and 360."
Montferrat - in the Piedmont region of Italy - produces some of the world's finest wine, and contains the 16th century Sacro Monte di Crea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. But forget all that nonsense: in Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed, Montferrat is just an ugly dude with half a bowl cut and a goofy accent who gets got real good by antihero Altier. In this new two-part video, follow Altier as he identifies his mark, leaps from roof to roof like a really angry Aladdin, sticks ...

Ubisoft have released their new website for Assassin's Creed. Using your keyboard you can unlock sections and goodies.

Hit on the link and check it out.

Assassin's Creed is the next-gen game developed by Ubisoft Montreal that will redefine the action genre. While other games claim to be next-gen with impressive graphics and physics, Assassin's Creed merges technology, game design, theme, and emotions into a world where you instigate chaos and become a vulnerable, yet powerful, agent of change.

The setting is 1191 AD. The Third Crusade is tearing the Holy Land apart. You, Altair, intend to stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict.

We're fresh from our most extensive hands-on time with Assassin's Creed yet, and were fortunate enough to play a nearly complete version that is mere days away from gold status. Unceremoniously dumped into the middle of the action with no training, our exploits ranged across two of the game's three cities and the wilderness area that connects them as we pursued two of Altier's primary targets.

You can check out a ton of new screens here.

As with all things new and innovative, ...

The game's creative director, Patrice Desilets, told Pro-G in an interview that one of the biggest challenges the team is currently facing is fitting everything into a 360 DVD disc compared with Sony's Blu-ray format. Conversely, he revealed that the team was "really struggling right now on PS3" because of memory problems specific to Sony's console.
The latest video interview with Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond has brought some devastating news for anyone hoping to get their hands on a demo of the medieval sneak-'em-up.

With the game about one month away from release, there'll be no playable demo beaming its way through the pipes of PSN or Marketplace.

Raymond explained that as Assassin's Creed is a sandbox game, it's too difficult to pick a portion to give away and let players experience it.

She also points out ...
We should have expected it really - from observing GRAW - but the PC version of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed has been confirmed as releasing last.

Puffing and wheezing at the rear, Altair's PC action-adventure has been pushed back to early 2008, while PS3 and Xbox 360 cousins get to go na na na-na na as Assassin's Creed releases on consoles this ...
Sept 25, 2007

Here's a neat little Assassin's Creed trailer, giving an insight into the near-invisible skills of the game's lead killer, Alatair. Showing a group of shadowy crusaders debating around a table, the climax is a surprisingly subtle one.

Ubisoft has been touting Assassin's Creed about recently, and we were fortunate enough to get our own hands bloody in some combat action. While we can't dish all the info yet, when we're given the go ahead we'll fill your eyes with first-hand ...

Sure, that's an extremely strong statement to make, particularly if you've been following the game as closely as IGN have. The upcoming action title, which features an assassin named Altair during the Third Crusade, has been a heavily anticipated action title ever since it made its first debut two years ago. Even the latest demo that IGN was shown at this year's E3 generated greater buzz, as players tracked down and killed a slave trader. But as IGN have found when we checked out the latest build of the title, Assassin's Creed is much more than killing influential people, climbing buildings and making stealthy escapes into crowds. In fact, Assassin's Creed is designed to be much more of a sandbox-like experience, giving you the freedom to explore and complete missions whenever and however you want. We went to Montreal to check out the latest build, which was going to be shown on the floor at TGS, and found out just how malleable our explorations as an assassin would be.
Aside from a cowl and a knife, the other key attribute for a Hashshashin is the ability to remain hidden in plain sight. Much has been made of our boy Altair's ability to hop skip and jump across the rooftops to shy away from prying eyes. A similar amount of hype has been pumped into Creed's concept of social stealth, where the townsfolk will recognise and react to you based on your reputation. In this latest batch of screenshots we get some more evidence he can get involved with ...

During E3 last week, Assassin's Creed was the most popular game of the show among the readers of IGN. Ubisoft's upcoming stealth/action game beat out the mighty Halo 3 (second place) and Activision's impressive Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (third) in reader popularity. Of the three platforms Assassin's will call home, the Xbox 360 version is by far the most popular, followed by the PlayStation 3 and PC iterations, respectively.

It should be noted that Assassin's Creed was the most popular cross-platform title, while Halo 3 was the most popular exclusive.
