There’s also been a big shift in the singleplayer - sorry, singleplayer and co-op – campaign. Where Flashpoint alternated between four main characters during an uprising in a republic neighbouring Russia, Armed Assault is a modern-day conflict that doesn’t focus on any one character. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You’re just another soldier on the field.
The conflict arises on the fictional island of Sahrani (although one fan has already spotted a real island that’s suspiciously similar) when an insurgent ‘Northern Force’ decides to invade the American-friendly democratic South. Your platoon of American soldiers were about to leave the island following some training exercises, but seeing as you’re already there...
Your missions are dotted around this island, all of which is freely explorable, and they vary dramatically in scope. After hostilities break out and you survive your first real mission, you’re taken to a strategic map with two possible next moves, and an optional mission to soften up enemy resistance for the next stage. A convoy of troops is on its way to reinforce their presence, and you – as a sharpshooter in command of a devastatingly powerful sniper rifle – are dropped nearby to hunker down in a bush and pick them all off.
There are eight or so of these supplementary missions, which make your next primary objectives easier, and they don’t have to be completed in full to help. If everyone comes flocking to your position after the first shot, you can pick off a few before bolting for the extraction point and leave it at that.
