Alone in the Dark

Central Park never looked so scary

The idea of other fellow park ‘prisoners’ also trying to survive the horror was a vital part of Eden’s plans last time we chatted with them. Unfortunately, it’s since been sacrificed, owing to time constraints. That said, Carnby will still meet lots of important characters throughout the story, some working with you, others trying to fulfill their own nefarious goals. Also, the free-roaming component in Central Park remains, with a multitude of environments to explore, people to meet, unpleasant encounters to survive, cars to hotwire, and tasks to complete that will help Carnby fill in the blanks of the story and work out what the hell’s going on.

True to Alone’s mega-blockbuster tendencies, the game is packed with adrenaline-pumping action sequences. In one instance, Carnby hangs from a rope attached to a crashed helicopter teetering on the edge of the cliff above him, which is shedding lethal debris and threatening to come crashing down on him at any second… zoinks!

Yet Eden is convinced a sense of deep immersion is key to creating the unsettling, foreboding tone that they hope will make the game the scariest ever. “Once we’ve got your full attention we can manipulate your emotions, which is when suggested fear comes in to play. The idea of what could be behind a door or hiding in a dark corner is much more powerful than simply being presented with some ugly dude trying to swipe your head off,” Polloni reckons. It sure does - consider us well and truly rattled, but still slavering with anticipation to find out just what secrets this malign park hides beneath its soil... and don’t worry, there’s really not long to go now.
