Gearbox Software has given a rare update on the status of Aliens: Colonial Marines, assuring fans that the shooter is still in development and promising "great things afoot".
Following the latest batch of rumors that Aliens: Colonial Marines was in trouble, developer Gearbox Software has indicated that it's still developing the title.
Gearbox's latest take on the Alien franchise was meant to ship late Feb but UK retailer GAME has been informing its pre-order customers that it will not ship until March 2009.
However, we recently dug up some new info of the title, and got some results. Developers on the game have stated "The team is definitely still hard at work on Aliens RPG", clarifying "We and SEGA will talk about the game when "it's time" to do so. I know that's annoying, but things shift around a lot during game development, especially with new technology. It's better for us and end users if we talk about the game when it's further in development. It helps avoid disappointment and confusion".
While not giving a specific date, SEGA have said the game will be arriving sometime quarter one, but calendar or fiscal makes a difference.
Late Friday, reports came out of Gearbox Software that several employees had been laid off and their upcoming shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines had been cancelled. Well, it seems the layoffs did happen but the game is still alive.
"This is no joke," said Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, and I had to agree. The more we hear about Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC, 360, PS3), the more exciting it sounds for fans of the original films.
Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, has explained why upcoming FPS Aliens: Colonial Marines wasn't shown at E3 this week, saying it was publisher SEGA's decision and had nothing to do with the current quality of the game.
Sega has unveiled their upcoming line-up through the first quarter of 2009.
SEGA has today issued an updated release schedule which includes confirmation of the delayed release of two of its biggest titles for 2008. Both Aliens: Colonial Marines and Empire: Total War are now scheduled for release in Q1 2009.
22 years seems like a long time to wait for a movie tie-in. But, then, not every movie is the genre-busting horrorfest Aliens, James Cameron's all-action sci-fi sequel to Ridley Scott's similarly brilliant Alien. If Aliens: Colonial Marines is even half as thrilling an experience, the double decade wait will have been worth it. ...

It's no mean feat powering up from being video game publisher No. 14 in 2004 to becoming the industry's sixth largest third-party publisher today. But Sega of America is tasting that success. Industry analysts credit its president and COO since 2005, Simon Jeffery, as the force behind the company's struggle to reinvent itself.
G4: This morning, Sega revealed many intriquing details about their upcoming squad-based FPS based on the Aliens movie series.
This game needs to be awesome. It really does. And by the looks of the first images, Gearbox Software is going the right way about it.Marines can be seen blasting at aliens and Facehuggers with meaty machine guns in dark, moody corridors. Now, we'll admit that the scans look so good that we wouldn't be surprised if they're actually cheeky renders. But if this is the art direction Gearbox is going for, then we're happy regardless. Take a look at ...
