PS2 Review
Oct 10, 2007 The Life goes out not with a bang, but a whimper. Sadly, too, as we've come to grow fond of Sony's unique twist on the ever-so-predictable world of NBA games. Sure, other titles may have had slicker gameplay and sharper visuals over the years, but The Life's story-driven mode was easily the most entertaining take on the staid sports genre. Unfortunately, the end of the Life trilogy is not one that'll go down in the history books - if we're lucky, that is. For reasons we can't ...

Oct 1, 2007 Remember John Starks? He toiled away in basketball's minor leagues for years, working on his game until he was plucked out of purgatory by Pat Riley. A couple of seasons later, he was an All-Star point guard for the NBA Finals-bound New York Knicks. Sure, he had a few flaws - no Knickerbocker fan can ever forget his brutal performance in Game 7 of the Finals - but in the right situation he turned into a star. NBA 08 for the PSP reminds us a lot of Mr. Starks. It's taken a few ...

PS3 Review
Sept 27, 2007 Sometimes, less is more. Other times, less is, well, just less. And in the case of NBA 08, less is definitely not everything we were hoping for. While Sony's PlayStation brand-exclusive series has historically trailed its counterparts on the court, the PS2 versions have sported a detailed career mode called The Life for two years running. These basketball soap operas have easily become some of our favorite guilty pleasures. Unfortunately, the PS3's NBA 08 still has no Life, nor ...

PS3 - NBA 09 The Inside - NBA 09 The Inside

Sony’s first-party basketball title has long been the black sheep of the NBA posse, considered a pint-sized squirt watching from the sidelines as the big boys – 2K and Live - grapple for supremacy. This season is no different, although considering the prowess of its competition, that’s no real shame. NBA 09 The Inside may not be a jaw-dropping, drenching-in-atmosphere tour de force, but it continues to improve and should no longer be a mere afterthought in the hoops conversation. ...

PSP - NBA 09 The Inside - NBA 09 The Inside

A funny thing happened on the way to another lukewarm PSP review of Sony’s latest pro hoops title – the more we played NBA 09 The Inside, the more we realized just how much fun we were having. Instead of throwing together a barely-improved rehash of the last couple of versions of their game, Sony has produced a remarkably enjoyable portable basketballer that surprised us in all the right ways. ...

PS2 Review
Games have been progressing to the point where they are nearly photo-realistic. Now that consoles can re-create pro players in dynamic digital detail, animating those on-screen pros fluidly and realistically becomes equally important. The most convincing graphics in the world won't suspend your disbelief for very long if the polygonal players move like mere action figures. Clearly, the designers behind NBA 2K6 realized this too, because the animations in the latest NBA 2K series entry are ...

PS3 Review
it rocked on 360, and now it rocks on PS3. The newest hardwood hoops sim from 2K Sports is simply the sweetest looking and sounding b-ball game we've ever played, the kind that makes people stop what they're doing and watch in wonder when it's on the screen (assuming, that is, you've finally dropped some cash on an HDTV). It may not be perfect, but any faults can be forgiven because, well, it's just so damn pretty you can't stay mad for ...

Xbox Review
The saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." We're pretty sure that's the attitude of the folks at 2K Sports this year, at least when it comes to their current-gen hoops title NBA 2K7. While some of the ancillary modes are expanded, and the online options shine brightly, the on-court gameplay remains virtually unchanged from last year. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but gamers may have reason to pause when they mull over their decision to re-up for another year on the ...
