PS2 Preview | Yakuza
You're walking down the street, minding your own business - in a flashy suit and snakeskin shoes, sure, but you're not in anybody's face. Suddenly, you see a beautiful girl and a drunk creep. You realize that she's trying to get away from him - it becomes clear when she hides behind you. You can tell him to kiss off, so you do - and the girl invites you to her favorite bar for a couple of drinks. She's sexy and she seems to be into you... but the room starts spinning way too soon. You wake up ...

PS2 Preview | Yakuza
There's certainly no shortage of crime games, especially on the PS2 - so why the hell should you care about yet another "out of jail and suddenly caught up in a whirlwind of gang activity" outing? Because Yakuza will totally immerse you in the seedy life of Kiryu Kazuma, a former gang member who's still workin' the Gucci suits and alligator shoes. As you freely explore the garbage-strewn, neon-lit streets of this virtual Tokyo district, you'll instantly notice how much detail has been poured ...

PS2 Preview | Yakuza 2
Yakuza 2, the sequel to Segas sprawling gang-land saga, was just released in Japan. We loved the original so much – seriously, go get it – that we couldnt wait to rip off the plastic and get back to beating the crap out of henchmen. Too bad the game wouldnt let us for over a half hour. What!? This isnt Xenosaga, Sega. We dont want forty minutes of cutscenes before the game even starts. If every game let us beat up a yakuza henchman on the title screen, then surely the videogame ...

PS3 - Yakuza 3 - Yakuza 3 - import review

Amusement Vision’s brace of Ryu Ga Gotoku games on the PS2 (the first of which was released in the west as Yakuza) effectively picked up where Sega-AM2’s unfinished Shenmue series left off, full of memorable characters and big fight scenes. Some things have changed in Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan! aka Yakuza 3. This third game in the series is set in 17th century Kyoto and its surroundings, and concerns itself more with samurai ...

PS3 - Yakuza 3 - Yakuza 3 - import hands-on

Walking. Brooding. Staring. They’re all popular activities in Japanese crime series Yakuza, and this - the third - is the talkiest, broodiest, stariest installment yet. Oh, it’s changed a bit - the sudden shift from the present day to the 1640s is a bit jarring at first - but the important things are still present and correct. You still stamp on men’s faces. You still hang out with giggling ladies. And you still talk a ...

DS Preview | Yggdra Union
Strategy buffs must be in love with the Game Boy Advance. It's home to some of the best magician-studded, spell-casting war games ever made - and this fall there's another fiendish uprising to stuff in Yggdra Union (say it with us: Igg-dra). Like any globe-spanning, turn-based battle for supremacy, this one begins with an out of control empire pillaging a relatively peaceful community. It so happens they left alive Princess Yggdra, who escapes and vows revenge on the Bronkia empire. So it's ...

DS Preview | Yoshi's Island DS
Often cited as Super Nintendo's last great hurrah, the original Yoshi's Island was a cracking twist on the Mario platforming template and a rare star outing for the plumber's trusty steed. Brought back from the grave a couple of years ago on Nintendo's portable Resurrection Engine (known to the general public as GBA), as the confusingly named Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Yoshi's baby-ferrying jump-a-thon has weathered the years remarkably well. It just goes to show that good game ...

DS Preview | Yoshi's Island DS
If the completely classic style of New Super Mario Bros. isn't enough to satiate your 2D hunger, we're going to bet the animated-storybook presentation of Yoshi's Island 2 will serve as a welcome side dish of nostalgic dessert. Instead of playing as Mario, you're the long-tongued dinosaur Yoshi - you do, however, carry Baby Mario on your back, and have to constantly monitor where he is at all times. If you're hit, Baby Mario pops off and floats around in a bubble until you pop him back out. ...
