PC - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - Mythic: Activision Estimate That It Takes $1 Billion To Compete With 'World Of Warcraft' Is Overblown MTV Multiplayer's Tracey John writes:

"Mythic VP and lead "Warhammer Online" designer Mark Jacobs said it wouldn't take a billion dollars for a competing MMO to take on "World of Warcraft" - maybe only $100 million.

"When certain people throw out ridiculous numbers, you know they're throwing out ridiculous numbers because they want to scare off competition or they want to make themselves seem invincible and that sort of nonsense," he said, referring to a statement Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick made at an investor meeting earlier this year.

"Realistically, if you're going into this space for the first time, and you want to compete with 'WoW' and you want to compete with us - because we're going into that same space - you've got to make sure that you have at least 100 million dollars," he said.

When I sat down with Jacobs last week during a demo of the game, we talked about what makes an MMO successful. Having worked in the industry creating MUDs in the '80s, online games in the '90s, and Mythic's biggest hit "Dark Age of Camelot" in 2001, he had some advice for those wanting to make it in the MMO business.

So why is $100 million the magic number?"

PC - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - IGDA Blasts Mythic Over Warhammer Crediting Edge writes: "IGDA chairperson and 38 Studios VP of business development Jen MacLean has criticized Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning developer Mythic for its decision not to credit the MMORPG's full development team.

Mythic recently announced plans to only credit developers currently employed with the studio, a move that has disappointed the IGDA, which is in favor of an industry-wide standard for game credits.

"This policy is disrespectful of the effort of the game developers who worked on the game, and misleads both consumers and game industry peers," wrote MacLean in the IGDA's August newsletter."

PC - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - Warhammer EU Pricing - Fustercluck RockPaperShotgun reports:

"There really does seem to be a lot of confusion regarding the pricing of Warhammer Online. You'll remember that a couple of weeks back the EU prices were announced, and we called them into question, noticing they were simply conversions of Euro into Pound, not only very odd numbers, but numbers well above the competition. We nagged at the UK PR, Indigo Pearl, and they eventually came back to us with new prices in line with what we'd expect. Well, madly, it doesn't end there."

"If you really think that we're doing something wrong, at least have the balls to stand up and go 'Hi, my name is so-and-so,'" said Mark Jacobs, VP of EA-owned Mythic Entertainment."

PC News from N4G | Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
PC - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - IGN: Warhammer Online Nearing Gold Thursday's big press event at EA's corporate campus in Redwood Shores was an opportunity to check out its large slate of games. And while one of those games was Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game from the EA-owned Mythic Entertainment studio, the major news is that it is on the cusp of completion.

Creative director Paul Barnett told IGN that the client code, basically what customers will pay for in the box, will go gold sometime next week. With the big Games Convention in Leipzig scheduled for next week as well, it wouldn't be surprising to see Mythic make the big announcement there. Barnett also said that Mythic will work on tweaking and optimizing the server code right up until launch in mid September.

PC - Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning - 230 classes nuked from Warhammer Online Sarcastic Gamer writes:

"Mythic's latest game, Warhammer Online, happens to have the catchy subtitle of 'Age of Reckoning'. As you may have noticed, if you turn the game's title into an acronym it becomes W-A-R, which can lead to many not-so-hilarious phrases such as 'WAR is coming' as donned by the official site. Of course, the title is purely coincidental and not at all planned. I made a game once called Terry Has Igloo Syndrome In South America, Norway and Western Europe Soon, Oh My Eggs! Gaming Also Means Exhilaration, and that acronym came about purely by chance. My game had pretty low sales, but that was probably because the gameplay comprised of moving a grey block to the left, at progressively slower speeds. I thought it was genius, but my bank manager disagreed."
