Monday 24 July 2006 Nintendo has today proudly announced that it has sold 21.27 million DS handhelds worldwide since its November 2004 launch. The total includes sales of DS and DS Lite - the new, sleeker design of the dual-screened handheld - and equates to 23 systems per minute - that's nearly one every two seconds, non-stop since launch. George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, stated that he was "thrilled to be announcing this ...

Earlier this week, we ran a story about cracks appearing in DS Lite systems' hinges - largely in those bought in Europe and Japan. Today, Nintendo fired back a statistic that puts the story in, well, a whole new light. According to Nintendo of America, "In the U.S., the reported number of small cosmetic cracks in the plastic hinge of DS Lite systems represents less than 0.02 percent of the total units sold." Further, the company contends that "This cosmetic issue in no way impacts the gameplay ...

Thursday 20 July 2006 The first footage of new DS browser Opera running on the Nintendo handheld has surfaced in preparation for the software's launch in Japan on 24 July. The DS browser has been designed by Opera Software which makes use of the handheld's WiFi connectivity. Opera allows both screens to be used to view one web page, or to use the top screen for a zoomed-in view that can be navigated with the stylus on the bottom, touch-screen. There's also a keypad option for the bottom screen ...

Last year it was dead pixels, but now it seems it's the hinges that are dismaying Nintendo DS owners. The smaller, sexier version of the dual-screened handheld was only released in the US last month, but many gamers are reporting that cracks have appeared in the hinges that link the top and bottom screens. Most of the reports have come from Japan and Europe, and describe a small fracture appearing on the top-screen part, just where it joins the hinge of the bottom screen. So far, our DS Lites ...

Wednesday 12 July 2006 Nintendo has reclaimed its position at the top of the UK handheld sales charts for the first time since PSP's launch, thanks in no small part to the success of DS Lite. With over 200,000 DS Lites sold in its first 10 days on sale, the handheld is now the best-selling full-price console on the market. The bad news for Sony doesn't end there, though, with New Super Mario Bros for DS outselling PSP's top-selling game Tomb Raider: Legend by over five copies to one. With ...

As reported by our sister site Next Generation, Nintendo's DS Lite is pushing the Japanese game industry to 34% growth over last year, on the back of such hits as the sequel to Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros. Right now, the original DS and DS Lite are the two top selling game consoles in Japan. This news is driving up Nintendo's stock ...

Thursday 29 June 2006 Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing a pink version of DS Lite in Japan on 20 July, presumably to complete that make-up compact look. The shade is described not as merely 'pink', though, but as Noble Pink, which means any red-blooded male can own one and touch-up their Nintendog without fear of ridicule. UK gamers will unfortunately have to wait to see if they can get DS Lite in a noble hue as Nintendo hasn't confirmed any plans to release it over here. But ...

DS News | Nintendo DS
The Nintendo DS is slowly encroaching on the PSP's multimedia functionality super-party. Next month, Opera Software is releasing a DS web browser in Japan for about $30, adding a whole new level of possibilities for the excessively successful handheld. There'll be two versions, of course - one for DS Lite and one for, as it's now been affectionately named, the DS Phat. Sadly, there's still no US release date or official price to go on. What's the deal Opera? Don't make us have to pull out our ...

Monday 19 June 2006 A significant shipment of black DS Lite handhelds, along with a number of games, has gone missing in Hong Kong. An entire cargo container holding the goods - reported to be worth 18 million Hong Kong dollars (£1.25 million) - has vanished. The sting in this particular tale is that the shipment was due for Europe, where DS Lite is launching on 23 June for £100. Hong Kong police are currently offering one million Hong Kong dollars (£69,700) as a reward for ...

The redesigned, thinner DS Lite went on sale here in the US on Sunday and managed to erupt 136,000 units out of retail stores in just two days. A similar situation exists in Japan, where the Lite pushed 135,000 from May 29 to June 4, while Sony's PSP scraped by with just 24,000. Hot on the heels of the white-hot DS Lite sales are numbers for New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day. The two titles ranked number one and three, respectively, as the top-selling games ...
