New Gears of War to arrive in June

Microsoft has confirmed that a new edition of Gears of War will be hitting US shelves on June 24 and will be accompanied by a price drop.

The 'two-disc' version will include previously-released multiplayer maps and the Annex game mode.

Achievement whores will be pleased to know that the new version offers the potential to add 250 points to your Gamerscore.

There'll also be a bunch of Gears of War 2 stuff on the second disc ...

Specialty retailer GameStop has beat Microsoft to the punch in releasing details on the new $39.99 Gears of War re-release that we reported on last week. The retailer reveals that the package will include two free map packs, themes, gamerpics, plus a load of trailers from GoW 1 and the upcoming GoW 2 - all on a separate bonus disc."

360 - Gears of War - Retailer Teases New Gears of War Edition A listing on GameStop's retail Web site shows a listing for a title called "Gears of War With Maps," which IGN are assuming is a planned re-issue of the Epic Games shooter that will include the extra multiplayer content released over Xbox Live.

The news bubbled out onto online message boards today, but Microsoft has yet to shed light on the mysterious new SKU, except to say the following in an email to IGN:

"We have not made any announcements about a new version of Gears of War."

360 - Gears of War - The State of The Next-Gen Video Game Console With the release Monday of Wii Fit, the exercise game that some video game analysts have predicted could become one of the best-selling titles of all time, it was Nintendo's turn to dominate headlines related to the so-called next generation of consoles.

The "next-gen" era began in November 2005 when Microsoft launched its Xbox 360 and then really kicked into gear a year later when Sony and Nintendo pulled back the wraps on the PlayStation 3 and Wii, respectively.

Sony's PlayStation 3 was expected to be the next-gen winner, especially with a built-in Blu-ray player and incredible graphics courtesy of its Cell processor. Yet, the PS3 is generally seen as next-gen's loser, due to high prices, the resulting lackluster sales, and the perception of a paucity of killer games for the platform.
