The nominations for the 79th Academy Awards have been announced, and it would seem Oscar’s not in a very SF kind of mood. Despite topping many critics’ “best of the year” lists, Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth has to make do with nominations for best original screenplay, cinematography, original score, make up, art direction and best foreign language film. The similarly lauded Children of Men is recognised in just the adapted screenplay, cinematography and editing categories. The Prestige , Superman Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean 2 all get nods for technical awards.
Most disappointingly , Casino Royale has been completely overlooked, with not even Daniel Craig’s magnificent central performance getting a look in. Looks like Bond will have to settle for his nine nominations at the Baftas.
