Old Republic will be a ‘dream game’ for Mass Effect or Dragon Age fans, says BioWare

When it was revealed that Star Wars: The Old Republic would be an MMMO – and not a new entry in the Knights of the Old Republic series – many BioWare fans were disappointed. But the game’s lead writer recently explained why he thinks Old Republic will be a ‘dream game’ for Mass Effect and Dragon Age fans.

In an interview with CVG, Star Wars: The Old Republic’s lead writer Daniel Erickson said, “If you’re someone that loves everything an MMO brings to the table, loves the community aspect, loves being able to see other people and say, ‘I have better shoulder pads than you do,’ everything you loved about MMOs is there for you.”

“If you are a hardcore, traditional BioWare fan – a Mass Effect or especially Dragon Age fan – this is the dream game. It is an RPG forever. It is an RPG that at the speed and pace that I play RPGs as a gamer, five or ten hours a week, I could never finish this game,” says Erickson.

Of course, we don’t expect the lead writer to say anything less than positive about the title he penned before it launches. Still, it’s heartening to hear continued confirmations that Star Wars: The Old Republic’s development team is working on marrying the best of the MMO genre and the story driven RPG experience the studio is now famous for.

You know I'm really digging all the lines of voice acting this game will have which will help me want to continue to play an MMO but I just listend to Talkradar. Yes how long can you play an MMO and just that MMO. Seriously Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age were great but I've played a lot more other games as well.

I adore BioWare and all, but that statement is just stupid. I've been a BW fan since the KOTOR days and I see no way that an MMO, even one by them, will ever appeal to me. I say that no game should ever be fully supported by the multiplayer aspect without a single player campaign. Every game needs single player, because without it you're just alienating a huge audience.

This game looks like my first MMO.
  • JohnnyMaverik - July 9, 2010 11:33 p.m.

@ JADENkOTOR "This game does look pretty good" It looks like a very good MMO, but if for people who don't like MMO's they have'nt SHOWN anything that looks like it'd appeal them. "you can't really doubt anything BioWare does" Don't get me wrong, I love Bioware and I don't care if they make an MMO, as long as they keep making single player stuff, but yes I bloody well can doubt them. When they come out and say it'll be as great as an experience as Dragon Age and Mass Effect 1 & 2 for fans of those games who don't necessarily like MMO's, I'll bloody doubt them. "I don't know how they think they are going to make this feel like an RPG though... I really don't think its possible." Exactly what I was saying so why exactly am I a tool? That hurt my feelings you know :'( Disclaimer: I have no feelings -_-

"If you’re someone that loves everything an MMO brings to the table" I'm not. I may be the opposite.
  • BriefCandle - July 9, 2010 10:09 p.m.

If this game has any similarities to KotOR, I can imagine it being pretty good.
  • Cleanser247 - July 9, 2010 10:02 p.m.

This looks great! I thought the trailer form E3 looked really cool as well.
  • JADENkOTOR - July 9, 2010 9:16 p.m.

Yeah I watched it live and definitely sharted myself... I have to wait for the real deal before I go and start pre-ordering though.
  • H2A2I00 - July 9, 2010 9:09 p.m.

@JohnnyMaverik i would prbly just break something and then get over it and try selling to someone else who is about to make the same mistake i made :)
  • H2A2I00 - July 9, 2010 9:07 p.m.

Well I'm back @db1331 i prbly wouldnt buy it just because i can get NPC, but thanks for trying to reach out I never pre-order games and i will never spend a penny if i feel it will be wasted the only way i would buy this game was if it was considered an absolute masterpiece anything lower than that and i aint getting it
  • db1331 - July 9, 2010 8:47 p.m.

@JADENkOTOR If I watch the E3 trailer and shit my pants right now, will you at least pre-order it?
  • JADENkOTOR - July 9, 2010 8:35 p.m.

Jmav = supertool This game does look pretty good and you can't really doubt anything BioWare does. I don't know how they think they are going to make this feel like an RPG though... I really don't think its possible. I will buy it if it comes out and everybody starts shitting themselves... if not, I won't bother.
  • crazytar - July 9, 2010 8:23 p.m.

is the "MMMO" in the beginning of the article supposed to be just MMO?
  • EDfromRED - July 9, 2010 7:30 p.m.

this game looks amazeing! Too bad this dream is unattainable for us console owners. My computers too clunkey for me to subscribe on PC. I hope Bioware manages to port this to us sooner than later.
  • JohnnyMaverik - July 9, 2010 7:24 p.m.

"I was just trying to give the guy a little hope." Don't, be honest, brutally honest, if he doesn't like MMO's he almost certainly won't like this game, and he SHOULD UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES pre-order and even worse buy a subscription package, because he will be disappointed, probably cry, possibly even end his life.
  • db1331 - July 9, 2010 7:18 p.m.

Well of course an MMO is always going to feel like an MMO. I was just trying to give the guy a little hope. And I can't imagine why someone would want to recruit an NPC in an MMO either, unless they were on at an odd time and couldn't find another player anywhere.
  • JohnnyMaverik - July 9, 2010 7:12 p.m.

I'll believe it when I see it, and in this case sorry Bioware, <3 you but that will prove to be a load of crap. @ db1331 You could recruit NPC's in Guild Wars and it still felt like an MMO, because it still had all the trappings of an MMO, and from what I've seen and heard of this so far, this does too. Also why would single player minded gamers want to pay a subscription fee to play an MMO like a single player game?
  • db1331 - July 9, 2010 7:01 p.m.

@H2A2I00 From what I understand, there will be NPCs you can recruit to quest with you instead of other actual players. Maybe if you do that it will feel more like a single player game than an MMO.
  • H2A2I00 - July 9, 2010 6:54 p.m.

Now that they say it might be a dream game for dragon age fans I am intrigued, but I'm not a huge fan of MMOs so I will wait till the reviews come in before I think about purchasing this one.
