Ni No Kuni Familiar Guide

Treats

Familiars can be fed treats to increase their friendship levels (familiarity) as well as boosting particular attributes. Each genus of familiars has a favourite treat that will give a double familiarity bonus when fed to them. Each treat will fill up your familiar by one slot in the bar that represents their belly. When they are full, they’ll refuse to eat. You can free up space by giving them a workout – nothing burns calories like the heat of battle.

Treats also act as points that can be used to increase the stats of your familiars. The maximum number of points you can invest into each familiar is capped at 50. These can be apportioned out across the 6 attributes (Attack, Defence, Mag. Atk, Mag. Def., Accuracy, Evasion) however you choose. Feeding familiars treats after this point will have no bearing on their stats but will still influence their familiarity level if this isn’t already maxed out.

Chocolate: Increases Attack. Boosts familiarity with Milites, Dracones.

Sundaes: Increases Mag. Def. Boosts familiarity with Vermes, Daemonia.

Flans: Increases Defence. Boosts familiarity with Automata, Flora.

Cakes – Increases Mag. Atk. Boosts familiarity with Nymphae, Arcana, Mortui

Pies – Increases Accuracy. Boosts familiarity with Aquatica, Minima, Nobilia.

Ice Cream – Increases Evasion. Boosts familiarity with Bestiae, Aves.

Gems

Feed familiars gems to have them learn new tricks. A familiar can only remember 8 tricks at any one time. If you want a familiar that already knows 8 tricks to learn a new one, you will have to choose a trick for it to forget first.

How can I know if the familiar is a normal, early riser or late bloomer?

As useless as this is, it's a case of observing their patterns as they level up if I recall correctly. Although if you're planning on grinding, I'd just pick whoever is your favourite as you'll have plenty of time for them to level up. The discrepancy in how fast they level up is quite obvious so you should be able to tell which category they fall into fairly quickly. I hope this helps, despite how vague it is!
