New Soulcalibur V trailer barely acts its age

Project Soul claims Soulcalbur V takes place 17 game years after the last installation, yet judging by the new gameplay trailer from Gamescom, and the ageless condition of Ivy's most defining – uh - 'assets', we're inclined to believe it's closer to 17 minutes. Nitpicky timeline issues aside, this minute-and-a-half clip does offer fans a closer look at the sequel's new characters, moves and emphasis on speedy beat-downs:

Soulcalibur V stars Patroklos, the son of series' veteran Sophitia Alexandra, whose destiny becomes intertwined with the Soul swords. He is joined by a host of familiar faces including Ivy, Maxi, Nightmare, and Siegfriend; as well as a handful of new characters including the teenage Leixia, Patroklos' sister Pyrrha and the supernatural Z.W.E.I.

The sequel expected to drop for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in March 2012.

On the trailer itself, I am incredibly happy to see Tira back. I notice that her outfit looks like a fusion of her SCIII 1p and SCIV 2p costumes. I'm hoping she has an active connection with Pyrrha in the story mode. And I wonder if she still shifts personalities.

The only characters outright disconfirmed are Hwang and Xianghua. Lizardman was also heavily implied to be cut. While Sophitia is stated to be dead and Kilik is also implied to have died, neither have actually been disconfirmed. And as Corsair89 said, Taki has been confirmed to be 'in the game' but we don't know if that just means she's in the cutscenes or is actually playable. Who knows? We might end up in another Cassandra+Sophitia situation like in SCII.

@NocturnalRight: I stand corrected. I should also mention after researching(wikipedia) SC5, Taki's appearance is confirmed, but whether or not she is playable has yet to be seen.

I wish people would stop talking about Ivy, if there's one thing that makes gamers live up to their 'pathetic virgin' stereotype it's talking about a video game characters tits.

@Corsair89 The blonde ninja is Taki's student. I'm still skeptical about this since I didn't really like four.

Finally I can see the slight graphical tweaks from SCIV. The combat does look a bit faster. Also: Who cares if Ivy ages or not? It's a video game, and a fighting game at that. Are they known to have decent timelines and stories? not really. Also, can we PLEASE get console exclusive characters who aren't unlocked on neighboring consoles via DLC later? That was pretty ridiculous in SCIV. Also, custom characters who aren't just reskins? Bring back SCIII's customizing. Chronicles of the Sword would be welcomed back with open arms.

@DeathByPoke True, but I'm still clinging onto the hope that she'll be an unlockable character anyway.

@Jamahl we know she doesn't age, it just still strikes us as a silly excuse for keeping her ridiculously big-boomed AND jumping ahead 17 years. Kind of a 'having your cake and eating it too' situation

So far the game is looking fantastic. I love the new 8 way run as well as the meter system. @Clovin64 Taki is most likely not returning because they already included her apprentice Natsu.

Actually, Ivy doesn't age. I think you guys reported on that a while ago.

Meh. The last Soul Calibur I cared about was for the Dreamcast. I was interested when Link was introduced but that was about it. I'm pretty sick of Ivy's tits being the topic of every SC article. Prediction: She is covered up more in this one so SC 6 can pave the way for an even skimpier suit.

Agree with Ampatent, I personally think she has her best design in SCV since SCII. Also, I'm really glad Maxi is in. Just hope Yun-Seong and Talim is in too!
  • Corsair89 - August 16, 2011 9:22 p.m.

@Clovin: Taki can be seen for a split second at 0:44-0:45 and 1:07-1:08. I'd recognize her ninja moves anywhere. And it looks like she dyed her hair blonde.

Honestly, I'm tired of this Ivy nonsense. If that's all anyone can comment about when it comes to previews of Soul Calibur V then why bother? She's far more tasteful than she was in IV and yet everyone still manages to moan about how unrealistic she is... news flash: IT'S A VIDEO GAME!

Hmmm... this still looks a lot like SC4. I'll probably by this anyway, but so far most of the returning characters don't look like they've aged a day. Still got my fingers crossed for Taki to come back.
  • Corsair89 - August 16, 2011 9:01 p.m.

I've been into SoulCalibur for a long time, so a new installment is always welcome in my eyes. As long as there are no Star Wars characters this time.
