New Sonic 4 level: Could it be the worst of all time?

True, we haven't tried it, but... seriously?

Words: on April 8, 2010

A new video has surfaced of what appears to be Act 2 of the Lost Labyrinth level of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. Now, let's be clear about this - we haven't played it, it's not an official Sega video and it could all just be from an early preview build of the game that nobody outside Sega was ever meant to see. We can but hope.

The Act in the video sees Sonic riding in a mine cart, controlled by tilting the level with the triggers (presumaby using motion control on Wii and PS3). You can also jump. Now, we already know that minecart levels can be awesome. But, in our opinion, this one looks like one of the most disjointed and frustrating levels we've ever seen in any game. That, or the guy playing it has never picked up a controller before. It looks worse than the skateboarding bits in Greendog. See for yourself:

We look forward to trying it out for ourselves and seeing whether it makes more sense during actual play.

Above: "This Act is played by tilting the screen while Sonic rides a mine cart. It's not very good, so try to get through it as fast as you can! OK?"

Sega, don't ruin the game. Just take it out and replace it with a real stage.

I'm going off this game very quickly.
First I was excited that sonic 4 was announced.

Then I found out it would be in episodes, then I found out that the in game music was a little dissapointing, THEN I this goddamn mine-cart level..

This looks bad, it will be even worse on PS3 if they force you to use the sixaxis

Anyone who's read gamesradar's article that's linked at the top here knows that mine carts are awesome (if you haven't read that article, DO IT NOW!), but this... this defies that reasoning. A tragedy. Probably not in the final game, but a tragedy nonetheless.

I just watched it all the way through (I only watched the beginning before because I was on my way to class), but it looks really really bad. There is one glimmer of hope that I can see though… perhaps this is just a demo for an iPad version of the game, I'm sure that Mr. Antista could testify that this is about how he felt playing Need For Speed: Shift on the iPad (hmm, maybe Sonic 4 will play better in bathrooms too…).

All I can say is that the console versions, especially the 360 (no motion control or six-axis), need to not have the whole world tilt while we're playing. Remember SEGA, we want to buy a Sonic game, not Loco Roco.

Seen the comments on Facebook and thought it was just a typical over-reaction by people who were just looking for something to complain about... however, all that I can say about this level is it is absoloutely horrendous. WHY does Sonic need a mine cart? WHY isn't it totally linear? WHY is a mine cart able to jump? It looks to me like they're trying to recreate Chemical Plant with a new twist... the twist doesn't work. Sort it out guys, we all have high hopes for this game.

Ew, SEGA, there's Loco Rocco in my Sonic! That looks absolutely horrible, hopefully it gets the axe before the release.

Even taking into account that whoever was playing has difficulty with the concept of UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT, it looked a bit dire. I can understand why they would think it was a good idea, but maybe this one should go the way of the levels culled from Sonic 2.

That looks confusing, parts of that level seem to have no clear forward direction. But as for a more puzzling, instead of constantly speeding, sonic I'd be cool with if it wasn't as messy as that'd be cool

Has to be said: why the hell is Sonic riding in a mine cart anyway? He's Sonic the freaking hedgehog!

man. whoever is playing that is just abysmal. i can see how it could move a lot easier if you had any idea what it means to create a downhill slope for moving forward (as this player clearly has no idea) but its certainly a bit...worrying.

i'm pretty sure there's a good level in there somewhere but a jumping mine cart is just dumb.

Does Sonic team have some quota they have to meet every game for shitty gimmicks?

Aww man that is so awful. I was amazed that a metal pole came out of the floor towards the end and gutted Sonic through the floor of the minecart.

I agree that the player is not great, but still. When a minecart hits a wall at 70mph, it should smash. Or at least shake, or make a noise of some sort. There is no way this is part of any official Sonic 4 release.
