Neil Gaiman Writes The Last Batman Story

It’s a Goth meltdown! Yes, Neil Gaiman has returned to comics with a Batman extravaganza. Next week sees the publication of Batman #686, the first of a two-part special event from the mind of the Sandman creator, with art by the legendary Andy Kubert. “Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?” promises to be a typically offbeat Gaiman experience, delving into the realms of life, death and the afterlife as it explores every facet and era of Bruce Wayne's life.

Gaiman spoke to Comic Book Resources about the project, saying: "The Batman stuff is awesome. I don’t know whether or not what I’ve done is awesome; I was asked to write the last Batman story and I did; or at least I wrote what I would want to see as the last Batman story. But on the way I got to ask the impossible of Andy Kubert, not once but often twice a page, and Andy and [inker] Scott Williams just came through. It’s astonishing, I’ve seen issue one and I’m really just unbelievably proud of what Andy and Scott have done, it’s wonderful. And what I’ve seen of issue two, it’s better. And while at the end of the second issue they may be wanting to burn me in effigy, I think they will be wanting to make Andy Kubert some sort of comics god.”
