Neil Patrick Harris directing Aaron And Sarah

Emma Roberts

Neil Patrick Harris isn’t content with being just a multi-hyphenate actor-singer-dancer – he now wants to be a director as well.

The How I Met Your Mother star, who opened this year’s Oscars ceremony with a musical number and recently did a stint directing Rent , has got his eye on romantic comedy Aaron And Sarah for his feature directorial debut.

Don’t expect Harris to go about it all half-cocked, though – he’s already got young stars Emma Roberts and Josh Hutcherson interested in the indie comedy.

Spanning a four year period, Aaron And Sarah follows a geeky nerd and a popular girl (that’d be the titular duo) whose relationship grows over “the four years, four proms and one funeral before graduation”.

The script by Pushing Daisies duo Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Creasey has been gathering dust at Rogue Pictures for years – but now Harris and Fox 2000 look set to rescue it.

With Roberts and Hutcherson more than able to hold their own in both drama and comedy, we just hope Harris can get a handle on that tricky four year span – having a film plot compartmentalised like that can often wreak hell on pacing. We’re rooting for you, Harris.
