Monster Hunter Tri: Complete monster and item drop guide [UPDATE]

Shares

Monster List:

Aptonoth

Type: Herbivore
Threat: 1
Weak Point: Head
Elemental Weakness: None Discernible

Item Drop
From Body: Raw Meat, Monster Bone S

The Aptonoth is probably the first monster you're going to run into and accordingly doesn't put up much of a fight. A few good blows will put it down for good. That said, it will flee if you attack it, so try hitting it in the head to begin with, which will leave it stunned. When killed you can harvest raw meat from its body.

Bnahabra

Type: Neopteron
Threat: 2
Weak Point: None Discernible
Elemental Weakness: Fire

Item Drop
From Body: Bnahabra Shell,  Bnahabra Wing, Monster Fluid, Bnahabra Carapace (High Rank Only) , Monster Broth (High Rank Only)

These pesky fellows are more an annoyance than a real threat. They're small and fragile. A single good whack with a hammer is going to kill them. That said, scoring that killing blow can be a problem. Bnahabra spends most of its time in the air, out of the range of melee weapons. Moreover their small size makes them hard to hit even when they're near the ground. They also have paralyzing poison, which can be problematic so avoiding their attacks is a good idea.

Kelbi

Type: Herbivore
Threat: 1
Weak Point: Head
Elemental Weakness: Fire, Thunder

Item Drop
From Body: Warm Pelt, Raw Meat, Kelbi Horn, Firedouse Berry, Blue Kelbi Horn (Horned Kelbi Only)

Discernible In terms of a threat, the Kelbi is harmless. That said, getting your hands on the thing can actually be a bit tricky, especially with heavier weapons, as they tend to move off if you get close and will flee at any sign of hostility on your part. They can gallop away in mere seconds if you don't score a good blow. That said, if you do score a hit they will go down and remained stunned so you can gather resources. You can outright slay a Kelbi, but to harvest from it you need to leave it alive. Just knock them out.

Jaggi

Type: Bird Wyvern
Threat: 2
Weak Point: Head
Elemental Weakness: Fire

Item Drop
From Body: Bird Wyvern Fang, Jaggi Hide, Monster Bone S, Bird Wyvern Bone (High Rank Only)

A single Jaggi is generally too weak to cause you much trouble, but chances are you're never going to come across just one Jaggi. They like to travel in packs and as do well at surrounding you and picking away at your health while you work to kill them all one by one. That is the best to handle them though. Pick one out of the pack and kill it, then repeat the process until they're all dead. Jaggi dislike fire so use it if its at your disposal.

Jaggia

Type: Bird Wyvern
Threat: 2
Weak Point: Head
Elemental Weakness: Fire

Item Drop
From Body: Jaggi Hide, Bird Wyvern Fang, Jaggi Scale, Monster Bone S, Bird Wyvern Bone (High Rank Only)

The female version of the Jaggi, the Jaggia fight in a similar fashion; attacking in groups that surround you. The best way to really deal with them is whittle their numbers down. Pick one and focus your attacks on it. If you want to stun them, aim for their head and attack with a blunt object such as a hammer or your shield. If you have a torch, bring that out as well as, like their male counterparts, the Jaggia are vulnerable to flame.

Just got it today. This should help! I'd prefer advice on weapon choices, though.

This is a good basic, beginner's guide to early monsters. But i'm not sure if you didn't use them because they weren't necessary, but you can use rations, rare steaks, well done steaks, power juices, mega juices, and energy drink to restore your stamina. Passed what it initially starts at. And with the Juices you will temporarily have unlimited stamina.

I would appreciate if you added what you can loot from them, because I'm having a pain in the butt trying to find monster slime for a villigar request.

The big monster guides are already up by the hardcore monster hunter cults, but I'd rather read a gamesradar article on it and give you guys the pageviews. Big monsters soon please :)

Not even up to Great Jaggie or luminoth huh? Those guys are best dealt with by ong range weapondry... specifically crag shots and and level 2 pellets. Never mind the abject frustration of catching a great jaggie.

Guide updated today with Qurupeco and Royal Ludroth, more to come!
  • hjlewis91 - May 9, 2010 2:45 p.m.

Some of the weak points are wrong. The weakest point on the Great Jaggi is the head, and the weakest point on the Royal Ludroth is the mane.

hey I would recommend using the switch axe, or bow gun, because the switch axe packs a wicked punch, and the gun can help you by not letting you get hit, for example, the heavy bow gun can be used as a shield and deals out the damage from long range, but if you get up close it can also be used as a mele weapon.

the switch axe is helpful because of its versatility, it has the power, and extra element, of a great sword, but is quicker than it, while in sword mode it releases an element such as fire or thunder or poison, etc., and moves quickly. while in axe mode it moves a little slower but has devastating combos, one of which depletes your stamina sadly :( Overall the switch axe is awesome!

I think you should also add where you can find items. I always forget where items are when I need to find them for upgrades for my weapon or etc..
