Monster House review

For all the star lung-power (Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kathleen Turner) and state-of-the-art technique, this 3D tooner has a pleasing modesty similar to Sony’s last house-based kid-scarer, Zathura. Here, the abode in question has a malevolent mind of its own – bad news for local pre-pubes DJ (Mitchel Musso), Chowder (Sam Lerner) and the little princess they’ve both got a crush on, Jenny (Spencer Locke).

Other than the bit where the house pegs it down the street, it’s hard to see why this had to be CG – especially when the one thing sure to give your child frightmares is the realism of the motion-captured characters (think The Polar Express spliced with Jimmy Neutron). The set-pieces aren’t quite top-floor, but this is still a fun ride – although the split-level humour could leave junior asking awkward questions about why the ‘uvula’ gag is so funny...
