PAX Prime 2012 was full of good games both big and small. We covered the big ones, now here are our favorite indie titles that we saw in Seattle...
Some gamers (and game developers) are too quick to judge a game for being a "rip off." A quick look at history will tell you things are that simple...
Still chewing your way through a stack of games from last year? Good, because the next few weeks are pretty light for new game releases. The last day of the month will deliver a couple huge franchise entries and a promising new IP, but until then, the field's pretty barren, with only a few notable releases coloring the rest of the month's gray days. Look within to pick your targets (or just decide whether you want to save your money for the broader releases February has to offer)...
December may offer the true climax of the holiday season, but in terms of new game releases, it's very much the calm after the storm. Most of the giant blockbusters of the season made their way out between September and November, but the final month of 2011 isn't barren by any means: big releases like Mario Kart 7 and Star Wars: The Old Republic lead the pack, while system-specific versions of some notable recent titles also find their way to store shelves. But if you read this over and don't see anything on the horizon that works you into a tizzy, surely November's overstuffed lineup holds a few leftover options to consider...
Sasquatch. Bigfoot. The Abominable Snowman. There are many names associated with the elusive, (definitely not fake) ape-men... eh, thingies. Contrary to what Harry and the Hendersons would have you believe, though, most would rather chow down on your colon than forge an interspecies friendship. In video games especially, your average mythical ape would like nothing more than introduce you to that big game over screen in the sky. So pack some animal tranquilisers and a hacksaw, as we take you on a tour of some of gaming’s greatest yetis and sasquatch. Oh, and watch out for that bastard who makes the soup.
Chances are good that you only half pay attention to these posts, but at the very least I want to take notice of this one, because it shouldn't be passed up. Oddy Smog's Misadventure is about a little ball of smog called Oddy – okay, so the game name gets no points for creativity, but hear me out. The titular hero wants to escape "The Machine" and make a bid for freedom. In order to escape, he needs to stick to rotating cogs and use inertia to fling himself higher and higher. It's pretty tricky, but very rewarding. Along the way, you'll encounter tricks and traps, as well as little Smog buddies who need rescuing...
Call of Duty: Black Ops is out, and if you've been counting down the days on your calendar and filling your living room with snacks like a modern-day fallout shelter, chances are your iPad is going to feel a little lonely in the coming weeks. But if you need a respite from Black Ops and the rest of the big-budget holiday blockbusters, here are five fresh iPad picks to help you fill every last second of the day with gaming goodness...
