Ingredients: Iron Ingots (x4), Redstone Dust (x1)
This is invaluable if you’re planning on venturing into the wilderness around your home. It’s easy to lose your bearings, especially if you get into a fight, but this will always point in the direction of your spawn point.
Ingredients: Paper (x8), Compass (x1)
Another useful navigation tool. Equip the map and it will make a visual record of where you walk, letting you chart your surroundings. It also shows where you’re pointing, much the same way as a traditional video game mini-map.
Flint and Steel
Ingredients: Flint (x1), Iron Ingots (x1)
Ah, yes. Fire. You can’t be a survivalist without nature’s warmest, burniest element. Combine flint and an iron ingot and this will let you set fire to any flammable surface. Use it on animals and they drop cooked, rather than raw, meat.
Ingredients: Coal (x1), Stick (x1)
A basic, but vital, survival tool. If you’re digging through the earth, keep your surrounding area lit by torches. These keep mobs away, as well as lighting the path ahead. It’s good practice to surround your home with them too.
Ingredients: Gunpowder (x5), Sand (x4)
Sometimes you just gotta blow a hole in something. Whether you’re clearing a path through a mountain or opening up a new mine, TNT is the go-to material for big, loud explosions. You can also use it against mobs, but we advise against it.
Ingredients: Sticks (x3), String (x3)
If a Creeper is chasing after you, fighting it with a melee weapon is a very silly idea. Instead, make yourself a bow and you can attack mobs from a safe distance. You’ll have to make your own ammo, though.
Ingredients: Flint (x1), Sticks (x1), Feathers (x1)
Arrows do different levels of damage depending on how long you stretch your shot back for. When they’re fully charged they’ll kill enemies in two hits. As of the 1.1 update, arrows can now be enchanted to unleash extra pain.
