Megamind , DreamWorks’ third 3D CG animation this year after Shrek Forever After and How To Train Your Dragon , made big numbers at the box office this weekend.
All but confirming that DreamWorks’ commitment to 3D and CGI was a step well-placed, the flick took $47m in 3,944 theatres and claimed the number one spot.
It easily beat competition from other new-openers Due Date (in second, $33m) and For Coloured Girls (third, $20m), and helped audience attendance leap by a massive 77%.
In fourth place, Bruce Willis and his fellow fogies proved they still had it with Red ($8.8m), while Saw 3D plunged from first to fifth with $8.2m.
Further proving that Halloween is now but a distant memory, Paranormal Activity 2 slid from second to sixth ($7.2m), while Jackass 3D fell (no doubt comically) from fourth to seventh ($5m).
Rounding out the bottom end of the top ten was Clint Eastwood’s thoughtful Hereafter ($4m), Disney horse flick Secretariat ($4m) and The Social Network ($3.6m).
Next week, Denzel Washington’s Unstoppable opens. Will that title prove prophetic?
