Mariachi Gringo review

When Dawson’s Creek -esque world champion moper Ed (Shawn Ashmore) finds an escape from his blah Kansas existence by befriending a local Mexican restaurant owner and chasing his dream of becoming a mariachi star, the scene is set for immersion into a vibrant music scene.

Unfortunately, thanks to barely sketched, predictable characters, it’s an opportunity wasted. There’s some beautiful local colour, and if you’re into the music it’s served well by reverential director Tom Gustafson.

But there’s not much more depth than you’d find in those annoying Doritos ads.
