That Mega Bloks Destiny 2 rumour might be true. Here's what it means for the sequel if so

At the end of last month, a story broke about a toy manufacturer product listing potentially leaking some details on Destiny 2. At the time, we didn’t run it, because the source was ‘anonymous person on a forum says…’, and if you’re going to start putting automatic credence into that stuff, you might as well live your life in accordance to the ‘facts’ written on the average pub toilet wall.

This is what was reported at the time, detailing three upcoming Destiny playsets:

- Destiny Cabal Goliath Tank Building Set
Buildable Goliath tank with rotating turret and articulated jets
Tank fully opens to reveal interior troop bay
Four highly detailed, super-poseable micro action figures include Commander Zavala, one Cabal Phalanx, and two Cabal Psion
Zavala comes with detachable armor and Answering Chords auto rifle
Cabal figures come with detachable Siege Dancer armor, weapons, and shield accessory

- Cabal Bruiser Battle Building Set
Buildable hangar platform
Set the scene for a clash between a Bruiser's crushing strength and a master swordsman's skill
A legendary warrior faces his greatest contest yet in the Tower hangar
Wielding his Raze-Lighter, hero of the Crucible Lord Shaxx prepares to pit his blade against the furious cleavers of a Cabal Red Guard

- Aspect Of Glass Building Set [Note: This one is in the game already.]
Buildable Aspect of Glass jump ship with opening cockpit and working launcher
Highly detailed, super-poseable Hunter micro action figure
Figure comes with detachable Spektar armor and Lord of Wolves shotgun
Jump ship stand features transparent articulated display rod

The emphasis is on that middle one, apparently detailing events that haven't happened. It could point to future sequel plotlines, but without any substantiation it's a bit of reach to trust.

However…

A promotional image has just appeared on Twitter revealing that the first of the Destiny Mega Construx construction sets detailed in the post does actually exist. It’s an innocent enough set, containing only characters and situations present in the current game, but it does lend plausibility to the rest of the post. A Cabal Goliath Tank. A Cabal Phalanx. Two Scions. Commander Zavala with an Answering Chord auto rifle. All there, all legit. Okay, so Zavala doesn’t do any actual shooting in Destiny at the moment, preferring to stand around the Vanguard Hall and whinge at Malcolm Reynolds, but it makes sense that Megablox would use existing NPCs as good-guy models rather than generic Guardian figures.

As for the supposed playset that this one may lend legitimacy to? It’s apparently set in the Tower Hangar, and features Crucible Master Lord Shaxx fighting off Cabal Red Guard. The interesting points to note there are:

A) Holy crap, Cabal invasion of the Tower?

B) Wait a minute, Cabal Red Guard don’t currently exist in Destiny.

Both of which make it feel like this stuff might be from the beginning of Destiny 2, or at the very least from the end of the current Destiny. Of course, there’s every chance that the original poster might just have tagged some made-up bullshit to a set that s/he knew was real, to add legitimacy by way of Trojan Horse – and, as is the way with toy adaptations, it’s entirely possible that some creative liberties have been taken with lore, even if this thing is real - but assuming that this stuff is legit, and that the Tower attack and Cabal Red Guard are coming, then that means some pretty heady things. And it also ties in very well to what we’ve heard about the shape of Destiny 2

Big, proper, open-world planets (or at least a planet). Multiple towns and settlements scattered across the world, in the tradition of a more, well, traditional RPG. A chance that progress might be wiped, leaving you to start a new character. It might seem a bit of a jump to extrapolate all of this from Shaxx fighting Cabal in the Tower, but it really isn’t. Because if there are going to be friendly settlements scattered across a planet, then surely there must be something wrong with the Tower, the steadfast citadel that’s kept the side of the Light safe for centuries. And the Tower’s security has become an increasing issue in the game of late, a breach in the wall very nearly leading to a Splicer Fallen invasion in Rise of Iron. Hell, the Splicers did manage to get in during that mission set in the Bannerfall multiplayer map.

And if we are going to have our characters – or at least our gear - wiped for a fresh start, then something pretty apocalyptic is going to have to happen to justify that in narrative terms. The fall of the Tower would be that.

Of course, all of this could turn out to be bollocks, but if it isn’t, then there’s a very good chance the transition between Destiny and Destiny 2 is not going to be a happy time.
