Limbo vs Braid: Which is better?

Limbo, then. It’s pretty great, eh? If you’ve not yet experienced its incredible sensory experience and mind-bending puzzles, click here to find out why you should buy it yesterday. For those who are either getting to grips with its bleakly dark world or have finished the game, we’re curious to know how highly you rate it. Namely, do you prefer it to the brilliant Braid?

We know they're radically different games. But both do share a brave artistic vision, expressed with narratives told in an innovative way. It's an issue which has got the office split right down the middle, too. Well, all three of us who're in today. Cundy and Houghton both think Limbo is the best thing since sliced Braid, claiming they prefer it to the time-hopping adventure. Meiks on the other hand still holds Braid up as the pinnacle of 2D gaming this generation, believing that Limbo is just a bit too stop/start in places.

Above: Bleak and jarringly violent, Limbo is one of this year's most striking titles

Above: Braid remains an absolute head-f*cking, though thankfully awesome, experience.

Anyhoo, enough from us. What do you think? Have you played both games? If so, do you have a favourite? And with XBLA's Summer of Arcade, do you think we're entering into a 2D renaissance? Let us know in the comments section.

I didn't try Braid yet, although I'm still not convinced it's a game made for me, it doesn't look that amazing. But hey, hopefully I'm wrong! I played Limbo at a friend's (don't own a 360) and I thought it was a very good game. I was impressed.

@k1ng94 I completely agree. Braid is easily the better game. Limbo was just too short with too few puzzles, but still good.

limbo sucks until it comes to ps3 and/or Mac/PC but i love braid

haven't played limbo yet, but remember the first-time i played braid I hit reverse and the music....reversed....genius. Can't wait to play Limbo based on how divided people are about this. LOL@the person who said the simpler puzzles of Limbo were more satisfying...is that because the walkthrough didn't give you the satisfaction of solving them yourself in Braid? Numbnuts.

I watched a playthrough of Limbo, and it was very interesting to watch, but ultimately had me saying, "...huh... so that's what the big fuss is about?"

Oops. Forgot to say I completely agree with Countzero in that I overpaid a little for Limbo.

Braid. Limbo is good, great even. This console generation is mostly built on shades of brown and atmospheric sounds instead of soundtracks. Change it to shades of black and you have Limbo. (Limbo is still a great game) Braid shows us these things we had forgotten, like soundtracks so good that you just stop playing for a while just to listen to the soundtrack. Color used so beautifully that you wish the game was your screen saver. Just using color made it stand out in this generation. Plus puzzles so expertly crafted you have to wonder how someone could ever fathom creating it in the first place.

I liked Braid better but both are fantastic obviously.

Braid is the better game, in my opinion. More complex puzzles, better gameplay design overall. It's a more substantial gaming experience. And I liked what it tried to do with the story. It was ambitious, and pretty sophisticated. Limbo is beautiful, and oozes with atmosphere. But the puzzles are simpler, and not as well designed. It doesn't give you as much to think about as Braid, and is extremely short. Both games cost me 1200 points. In the case of Braid, I felt like I got my money's worth. In the case of Limbo, I feel like I overpaid by about $5.

Braid IMO is a batter game. While not necassarily a better game in general, its longer, harder and the graphics are amazing, the watercolour is beautiful. The collectibles are harder and the story is great. Limbo is good too, I love the art but its short and I didnt like wndering through a factory for the last half of the game, plus the vague stpory isnt my type of thing. Good games tough, but I think Braid wins.

    I prefer limbo's subtlety.

I have only played Braid because I only have a PS3 so I can't say which is better until they bring Limbo out on PSN

I've played, beaten, and loved LIMBO. It was an amazing experience that hooked me in until I had done everything (beaten the game and unlocked all the achievements/avatar awards). I didn't even realize how addicted I was until I looked at the clock and my day was gone. I haven't played Braid yet (completely missed the bus on that one) but I'm downloading it now so we'll soo see.

Limbo is definitely more atmospheric but I really, really enjoyed the music in Braid, so Braid wins.
  • Kehno - July 27, 2010 4:16 a.m.

They're both fantastic games. Limbo is very simplistic, all-around; very little story, a simple art style, not a lot of sound, etc. Next to it, everything about Braid seems really over-the-top... the weird, cartoony-serious art style, the incredibly challenging, and the crazy crazy story. Limbo is a much more stripped-down, and therefore, enjoyable experience for me, and I've gotta give it the win.
  • CountFenring - July 27, 2010 2:51 a.m.

If Limbo didn't have some really badly designed jumping or timing puzzles, I might have given it a shot at being on the same level as Braid. But as it stands, I can't think of any moment in Braid that I wasn't having fun. Of course we all know that Splosion Man is by far the best 2D platformer.
  • Hypermonkey262 - July 27, 2010 1:58 a.m.

I never played Braid, but so far Limbo is one of my favourite games so far this year.
  • CandiedJester - July 27, 2010 1:21 a.m.

Am I really the only one who gets an uneasy feeling, and not in the good way, when playing Braid?! It's just so...I mean...the whole atmosphere, to me it feels like I'm playing a game set in a grandma's house after she's passed away. It's just so completely and utterly creepy to me. I don't like Braid, I don't like it at all. Granted I only played the demo, but that was enough of that game for me. *shivers* LIMBO, on the other hand, is complete awesomeness, and thankfully not set in a deceased grandparents house or a funeral home. I love love love it. So my vote goes to LIMBO, definitely.

Meh, Fark it, i choose both, and live on both sides of the fence, so my grass is always green...(100 cool points to any who gets that reference)
  • GayforGilbert - July 26, 2010 10:58 p.m.

too pretentious was Braid. I only appreciated the art style and music. Other than that, Johnathon Blow can...well, just that.
