Lena Headey stars in new Dredd image

Dredd , Pete Travis’ Judge Dredd reboot, has released a new image online featuring a battle-scarred Lena Headey as vicious gang leader, Ma-Ma.

Otherwise known as Madeline Madrigal, Headey’s character is responsible for flooding Mega-City One with the reality-altering drug Slo-Mo, a business venture that puts her in the bad books of Karl Urban’s Judge Dredd.

Headey has been discussing her character with Hero Complex , and compares her to a great white shark in the way that she dominates Mega-City One’s crime scene.

“I think of her like an old great white shark who’s just waiting for someone bigger and stronger to show up and kill her,” explains Headey. “She’s ready for it. In fact, she can’t wait for it to happen. And yet no one can get the job done. She’s an addict, so she’s dead in that way, but that last knock just hasn’t come.”

As for the film itself, Headey says that we can anticipate a much darker affair than the Sylvester Stallone version released in the ’90s.

“The world [ in the film ] feels really British,” she says, “and I don’t know if that’s because it’s so dirty and dark. And it’s violent. Just in terms of gunplay, they’re not afraid to show blood and gunshot wounds. And it’s set up in this concrete sort of shanty town - it’s shanty but they’re blocks - concrete favelas.”

We’re not too sure about Headey’s description of her home country, but that aside, this one is sounding promising. Dredd opens in the UK (where it’s both dirty and dark, lest we forget) on 7 September 2012.
